Fran Bailey who posted the photo on Facebook, external said the representation of women in their underwear and men fully clothed was "grossly, grossly offensive".
She said: "I also feel very, very strongly about the representation of women as being preoccupied with fancy little knickers, whereas men are presented as powerful and needing to be impressive.
"M&S are not by any means the only offenders but that particular window just epitomises everything that's wrong with current marketing and how far backwards we've gone."
Siân Steans, said the gendered approach was "disrespectful and ill thought out".
"When companies insist on men being fully clothed and women showcasing lingerie only, it sends a message about women's place in society as objects to titillate," she added.
A representative from M&S said they sell more underwear in all shapes, styles and sizes than any other retailer and they have a combination of displays in their windows, including a man washing up in a suit.

Council leader Jon Collins says they don't want to re-organise, but have no option if the county pursues plans to become a single tier authority.

Public Health England has been unable to confirm the source of an E. coli infection which killed two siblings from the Charnwood area of Leicestershire.
The children, who have not been identified, died from a rare complication of the infection affecting the kidneys last month.
Dr Lauren Ahyow from Public Health England - East Midlands said: "This type of E.coli has previously been associated with environmental sources and so whilst no definitive source has been confirmed, the likelihood of it coming from the human food chain or a water supply is very low."
PHE is currently in discussions with the Animal and Plant Health Agency about conducting further tests but said it is "not always possible to conclusively confirm a source" of the infection.
