    Hundreds of students, staff and fans of the Royals lined Centenary Square at the University of Leicester this afternoon.

    Braving the ran and cold, their spirits were not dampened by the time the Duke and Duchess emerged from the university library.

    They walked out to a chorus of cheers from the crowd, some of whom had been waiting in hope of a glimpse since this morning.

    Following a sombre event this morning at the King Power Stadium, it was a different end to the day, with the couple smiling and waving to cheering crowds.

    Before venturing outside in the square, Kate received a bouquet of flowers from a family involved with the professorship scheme which the Leicester City owner's £1m donation helped to set up.

    One of the young children, Sai Gokani, who has received help through the community project, presented the Duchess with the flowers and gave her a kiss.

    He originally went in for a handshake, prompting laughter and sighs of approval from those watching.

    Back at the King Power Stadium, our reporter has been speaking to Clive Ribald, a Leicester City fan for 50 years who's visited the ground at least twice a week since the helicopter tragedy to pay his respects.

    He said: "The crash was terrible. I feel it's important to pay tribute.

    "So much has happened in the past couple of years for Leicester, things we never dreamed about.

    "I think this visit from the next in line to the throne is great, an acknowledgement."

    During their visit to the University of Leicester, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will get the opportunity to hear about some of the educational programmes Leicester City Football Club has helped to support.

    This includes a £1m donation made by Khun Vichai in May 2018. The money is being use to fund a Professorship in Child Health.

    Barriers were in place for a crowd of hundreds but in the end it was only a few dozen who braved the rain for this Royal visit.

    And among those who did show up the mood was a little subdued.

    There was the excitement of spotting the Prince and Duchess and there was a fair bit of flag waving as they drove by.

    But this was a visit for the Royal couple to pay their respects and the crowd understood that.

    It's hard to forget when the helicopter crash site is so nearby - and many people were just happy to see such high profile recognition of the tragedy.

    As one dad-of-four put it, they're "sharing in our grief".
