  14. Survivor recalls violent rapist's 'cold, dead' eyespublished at 11:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2019

    BBC Radio Derby

A rape survivor has described the terrifying moment she was grabbed, assaulted and nearly killed while walking home from a night out.

The woman, who has not been named, had noticed a man getting closer to her on the dark street in Ilkeston but thought at first it was a friend "messing about".

"As soon as he jumped on me and tried to lift me up, I panicked," she said. "I was strangled, dragged to the floor... I thought I was dying, I wanted my mum.

"I saw [his] eyes - they were cold, dead. Then I was just left on the floor. I was too hurt to stand up. I tried to shout 'help, help me please' but my voice was croaky."

    Anthony DealeyImage source, Derbyshire Police

Anthony Dealey, 42, had tried to kill her.

Speaking publicly for the first time, the woman said she thought about that night in November 2017 "all the time". In the months after she would look at the eyes of men she met, even work colleagues, in case "it could be him".

It led to a police investigation seven times the size of a standard murder inquiry - helped by the victim's determination to bring him to justice - and ended in Dealey being jailed for life for rape, attempted murder, sexual assault and robbery in September. He must serve at least 13 years and six months.

The woman said messages of support she saw online were a "big comfort" but now she needs to "think about the present".
