From next week motorists will face major disruption on the A52 into Derby.
Two slip roads into and out of The Wyvern and Pride Park will be closed for the ongoing works, which are 12 months behind schedule and have cost £42m - three times the original budget.
One of the slip roads will be closed for 13 weeks to straighten it and add an extra lane to a roundabout, while the other will be closed for 13 months to allow a new footbridge to be assembled on site.
Businesses say the work will have an impact on their sales and jobs, costing them thousands.
Derby City Council said the changes are going to be "worth the disruption".
Project manager for the scheme, Phil Massey, said: "Unfortunately any scheme like this will cause disruption on the network but we are working to try and maximise working in the summer so that we avoid the Christmas period."
