A Leicestershire woman who denies murdering her newborn baby told a nurse it would be “just her luck” that the baby would have been alive when she put it in a carrier bag.
The defence has begun in the case of Hannah Cobley, who’s 29 and from Stoney Stanton.
The court heard how she collapsed and was taken to hospital three days after secretly giving birth in an outhouse at the family home.
The conversation with a nurse took place shortly after she’d revealed to her father that she’d given birth, placed the baby in carrier bags and left it by a shed in the garden.
She told the nurse she didn’t know whether the baby was breathing when she dumped it. The trial continues.

A Nottinghamshire man says he's terrified his house is going to fall down after a sinkhole appeared in his driveway.
The 1m-wide hole appeared outside Barry Brown's bungalow on Southfields Close, Kirkby Woodhouse five weeks ago.
Since then, surveyors from Ashfield District Council, Severn Trent Water, and the coal authority have all examined it and said they can't help as it's on private land.
Mr Brown's house insurance company says he needs to go back to the authorities. He feels he is getting passed from pillar to post.
Mr Brown, 83, said: "It's very worrying that the movement from the hole has got nearer to the property.
"My concern is the corner of the building could give way and then we are in major, major trouble."
He said the work is likely to cost £30,000 if no-one takes responsibility.
