    Residents in an area of Nottinghamshire are being warned to look out for two exotic raccoon dogs which escaped yesterday morning.

    The Japanese mammals - also known as tanukis - are thought to have dug themselves out of a private enclosure in Big Lane, Clarborough, at about 06:00.

    One was photographed a short time later at a nearby farm and is reported to have attacked a goat.

    Nottinghamshire Police warned that the animals "are potentially dangerous if approached" as they are not domesticated.

    However, the owner said they are "less dangerous than a fox" and every effort was being made to find them.

    Anyone who spots the raccoon dogs is advised to call 999.

    The parents of a one-year-old boy from Nottinghamshire fear they will never know exactly why he died.

    Rogan Bullas, from Hucknall, was one of triplets and did not wake up one morning in February.

    The initial post-mortem examination was inconclusive and while his parents wait for the full results of tests, they fear they will never get closure without answers.

    Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is the fifth leading cause of death among young people aged 12 months to 19 years old and latest figures show there were 41 cases in 2016.

    Mother Beth Bullas said: "You are questioning yourself about, 'What if we had done this, what if I had checked on him?'

    "They came into the world with three of them, now we only have two. And without him, nothing's the same."

    Father Vijay Digpal is hoping to run the Robin Hood marathon in September to raise awareness of SUDC.

    A campaign to keep a historic painting by William Hogarth at Leicester's New Walk Museum has raised more than £500,000.

    The 18th Century painting called "William Wollaston and his Family in a Grand Interior" has been on loan to the museum for 75 years and they needed to raise the money to keep it in the city.

    The Save the Hogarth campaign received donations from the public, along with national heritage charities and a "Pug Parade" along Leicester’s New Walk.

    The painting has been passed down through the Leicester Wollaston family and will remain on display until September before it is removed for conservation.

    A device being trialled in Leicestershire delivers electric shocks via your earlobes and could help treat anxiety, say researchers.

    The team who have been carrying out the trials of the handheld Alpha-Stim device said they were "surprised" by the results.

    Professor Richard Morris, who has worked on the trials, said: "It's just a small device that you can wear and do light duties or lie down with it.

    "I wasn't expecting it to have the effect it did."

    A decision about whether it will be available on the NHS will be made later this year.

    Inspectors have found a "mixed picture of progress" at Stocken Prison in Rutland since their last visit four years ago.

    During an unannounced inspection earlier this year, HM Inspectorate of Prisons found the release of several inmates "posed serious risks" to the public.

    They said some were sent to a resettlement prison for support prior to their release, while others were not.

    The report showed the prison's rating had declined from "good" to "not sufficiently good" with concerns about training, education and rehabilitation.

    However they said conditions remained reasonably good, that safety had improved and added that relationships between staff and prisoners "were generally positive".

  11. Windmill replacing sails after rot foundpublished at 08:43 British Summer Time 29 May 2019

    Heage Windmill is replacing two of its six sails this year, after a recent survey found signs of rot.

    The sails, which weigh a ton each, will be removed and new ones will be built on site by volunteers.

    The mill will continue to produce flour with just the four sails while the work is being carried out.

    A man has been charged with rape after an attack near a Leicester park.

    Leicestershire Police said the attack happened near Watermead Country Park in Thurmaston at 18:20 on Thursday.

    The 33-year-old man of no fixed address will appear before Leicester magistrates today.

    Four men have been arrested after a gun was fired in a Nottingham street last week.

    Police were called to Hazel Hill Crescent in Bestwood Park just after midnight on Thursday after reports of a shooting.

    No-one is believed to have been injured.

    A 24-year-old man was arrested in Western Boulevard yesterday afternoon and remains in police custody.

    Three others were arrested at a house in Bestwood in the evening - one in connection with the shots fired, two others on suspicion of assisting an offender.

    Football fans are trying to raise £25,000 to fix a coach that was damaged near Wembley on Monday.

    It was full of Derby County fans making their way home after being defeated in the Championship play-off final.

    The crowdfunding page has been set up by Aston Villa fan, David Jordan, who said the damage was caused by a minority of fans throwing things at the coach.

    "I witnessed these appalling events unfold and I was sickened by what I saw," he said.

    So far more than £5,500 has been raised.
