    The proposed expansion of Nottingham Forest's stadium has taken a step forward after a new lease on a plot of land was approved.

    A 250-year lease of land on Trentside North was approved by the Nottingham City Council's executive at a meeting this afternoon.

    The decision replaces the former 50-year lease held by the club.

    It will open the way for Forest to expand the Peter Taylor stand, as part of a plan to increase the ground's capacity to 38,000.

    Leicestershire Police say there were 90 crimes reported to them during this year's Download Festival and 14 arrests were made.

    The force said eight were for drug offences, two were for sexual assault and the other four were for burglary, possession of a weapon, flying a drone and a public order offence.

    The Conservative leader of Nottinghamshire County Council says she's backing Boris Johnson in the race to become the new Tory leader.

    Councillor Kay Cutts said she was disappointed not to see any women left in the race but Mr Johnson would be her choice to lead the country.

    Tory MPs will vote for a second time this afternoon as the process of choosing a successor to Theresa May continues.

    Ms Cutts told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We need a prime minister that's going to give us self-confidence in our country.

    "I think we've been too apologetic in the past and too sorry for being the British people that we are."

    A man has been jailed for two-and-a-half years after admitting two burglaries in Nottingham.

    Paul Shaw, 39, was locked up after admitting burgling a house in Waverley Street and a fast food shop in Lenton Boulevard.

    Police say Shaw, of no fixed address, took a television, an Apple TV box and a bank card from the house in the early hours of 2 January, later using the card at two city centre shops.

    On 4 January, he stole a CCTV monitor and three cameras from Corr’s Jerk Spot in Lenton Boulevard.

    Shaw was jailed at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday, having pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, two counts of fraud and possession of cocaine.

    Police say a drink-driver walked away with minor injuries after crashing his Audi A7 at high speed in Holmewood yesterday.

    The force's road policing team said the £50,000 car's safety features "undoubtedly saved his life" and it was lucky no-one else was hurt.

    It added a blood sample had been obtained from the driver, who was found to be over the drink-drive limit after the crash, external.

    A man has been jailed, external after causing another man "life-changing injuries" in a stabbing in Ironville.

    Police said Richard Hodgkinson's 20-year-old victim was "extremely fortunate" to have survived the attack in March but would "bear the physical and psychological scars of this incident for a very long time".

    Hodgkinson, 34, of Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire, was jailed for eight years at Nottingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to wounding with intent, possessing a bladed article and criminal damage.

    Leaflets urging parents to take their children out of lessons that discuss issues like same-sex relationships have been pushed through doors in Sneinton.

    It follows protests in Birmingham against the teaching of LGBT relationships at primary schools.

    It's not clear who's responsible for posting the leaflets, which includes a pre-written letter parents can send to schools to ask for their children to be excluded.

    Nottingham City Council says schools have a duty to teach sex education and it works with them to ensure it's of good quality.

    It added it was aware of the leaflets being circulated.

    A Nottingham MP says a lack of affordable homes to rent in the city, and across the country, is seeing many people falling into poverty, debt and homelessness.

    Labour's Lilian Greenwood told the Commons the freeze to Local Housing Allowance, the housing benefit for people in private rented accommodation, since 2016 has seen many families unable to cover the cost of renting a home and has called on the government to act.

    Family Support Minister Will Quince said the freeze had been essential to help cut the deficit but that it would end by next March.

    Health secretary Matt Hancock has promised a "full and thorough" investigation after two people in the East Midlands are known to have died from a listeria outbreak at English hospitals.

    The NHS yesterday confirmed nine cases in seven different hospitals - including the Royal Derby Hospital and the Leicester Royal Infirmary - all linked to contaminated sandwiches.

    The food involved, made by The Good Food Chain, has been withdrawn.

    Both hospital trusts and the government have issued their condolences to the bereaved families.
