  11. Family-of-ten criticises council for 'too small' housepublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 17 June 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

A mum-of-eight has said she faces the "impossible" choice between potentially making two of her children homeless or waiting for years for a council property big enough for the family to become available.

Fay Hunter, her partner Mark and her eight children - aged 21, 20, 19, 13, 12, 11, eight and seven - are currently living in a four-bedroom property in Thurmaston after being evicted when her private landlord sold her former rented home.

She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service the house was supposed to be emergency temporary accommodation but nothing has become available on Charnwood Borough Council's housing register for almost a year.

She said: "The property just isn't big enough. My three adult children should have their own rooms according to the council.

"I'm trying to support everyone but it's difficult to do that when as a family of ten we are squashed into a house that's too small for us. This was a temporary fix but we've been here for a year now.

"I am not asking for a mansion, just a place that's big enough for us to have a comfortable family life."

A Charnwood Borough Council spokesman said: "There are a number of factors that would determine how long an applicant may be on the register before they are offered a property, including the type and size of property their household requires, the number of other households on the register who require the same type and size of property, their banding and banding effective date and their bidding activity."

  15. Owl chicks die in heavy downpourspublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 17 June 2019

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

Dozens of baby owls in the Vale of Belvoir have been killed by last week's heavy rain.

Volunteers from the local owl conservation group found dead barn owl chicks in their nests and estimate as many as 40 will have died because their parents couldn't hunt in the bad weather.

Sadly they also found evidence parents had managed to find some food during an easing up of the rains on Thursday but by then it was too late for the owlets.

But it wasn't all bad news - some, like those below, have made it through.
