    BBC News

A community first responder vehicle was given a parking ticket while dealing with a medical emergency in Nottingham city centre earlier.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said the car had escorted a crewed ambulance to Angel Row at about 14:30 where one patient was treated.

    Parking ticket

The service said community first responder (CFR) schemes were run by volunteers who give up their spare time to attend appropriate emergency calls in their own community.

It said CFR vehicles were not exempt from parking restrictions, even when dealing with a 999 emergency, but any fines received were appealed.

Nottingham City Council said it was "legitimate" to issue the fine but in this case the ticket would be cancelled.

    BBC News

A BMW driver who hit and killed a cyclist in his newly-bought vehicle has been handed a suspended sentence.

Nottingham Crown Court heard father-of-two Gary Dowell died at the scene of a crash at the junction of the A612 and the A617 near Upton shortly before 22:00 on 15 May 2018.

The 52-year-old antiques dealer was riding home from the Cross Keys pub towards Kelham when he was hit by a car driven by James Ellison.

The court heard Mr Dowell had ridden through a red traffic light, had no lights on his bicycle and was wearing dark clothing with reflective strips on the side facing away from the car.

Ellison, 28, of John Gold Avenue in Newark, had been driving at least 13mph over the 50mph limit along the A617 when Mr Dowell crossed into his path.

Jon Fountain, prosecuting, told the court: "Had he not been speeding the collision could have been avoided."

Defending, Simon Eckersley said the "tragic accident" has had a "profound effect" on his client, whose plans to join the Royal Marines have been scuppered by the crash.

Ellison admitted causing death by careless driving and was handed a four-month sentence, suspended for a year, as well as being banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to complete 100 hours of community work.

Judge Sally Hancox said the case highlighted the importance of sticking to speed limits.
