Labour's Natalie Fleet gave an emotional interview ahead of the declaration in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.
The seat was previously held by Gloria De Piero for Labour but was won by Conservative Lee Anderson who had worked in Ms De Piero's office but defected from the party.

Neil O'Brien said it's "wonderful" to get re-elected and to increase his majority to more then 17,000.
"Hopefully this will now provide an enduring majority - we shouldn't have another general election again for some time and we can actually get on with the most important things.
"One of my big local priorities is trying to reform our planning system. Too often we get house built in the wrong places without the right infrastructure," he said.

"You can't buy happiness - but you can vote for it," said Andrew Bridgen after he was named as the winner of the North West Leicestershire constituency.
He was speaking about the area topping a recent happiness poll for the East Midlands.
The MP, who received a majority of 20,400 in the polls, said the constituency was a "very different" seat to the one he was first elected to in 2010.
"It was considered the most deprived seat in Leicestershire," he said.
As well as topping happiness polls he said the area was now recognised for its economic prosperity.
Luke Evans has been elected MP for Bosworth, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.
The new MP beat Labour's Rick Middleton by 26,278 votes. Mr Evans takes over from former Conservative MP David Tredinnick, who represented Bosworth from 1987 to 2019.
Michael Mullaney of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Mick Gregg came fourth.
Voter turnout was up by 0.4 percentage points since the last general election.
More than 56,000 people, 69.2% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.
