A man who helped to rescue a woman from a level crossing in Derbyshire believes anyone would have done the same thing.

He stopped at the barrier of the crossing when a woman pulled up alongside him on the wrong side of the road.

"I thought that was a bit strange but then she reversed up behind me and the barrier went back up.

"As I was driving over I thought 'there's something not right there'.

"I got about 20 yards up the roads and thought I'd spin around and have a look and she'd actually parked on the tracks," he said.

Mr Dainty, 39, who lives in Breaston, said he tried talking to her but aware of her dangerous position he said: "All I wanted to do was get the car off the track."

He removed her hand break and pushed the car off the railway track just moments before the barriers went down again for another train to pass.

"It's a busy part of the track and I never usually go that way - I thought I'd go that way for a change.

"I'm sure if I wasn't there somebody else would have done the same thing."

British Transport Police has confirmed it did receive a report of concern for the welfare of a woman in the Breaston area just after 20:00 on Saturday.

In a statement it said: "Officers attended, and the woman was taken to a place of safety."

  9. 'Please do not release lanterns for NHS workers'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 16 April 2020

    Samantha Noble
    BBC News Online

The government, fire services, and park authorities have been urging people not to use sky lanterns during the clap for key workers this evening.

Fire services across the country and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) have said a campaign encouraging the public to release the lanters in a show of solidarity for NHS workers is "misguided".

    Sky lantern

NFCC chairman Roy Wilsher said dealing with fires caused by sky lanterns means firefighters are diverted from supporting vulnerable people as part of the response to coronavirus.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said lanterns pose "a risk to wildlife, moorland, hazardous material sites and more – adding pressure on the fire service, and the NHS".

The Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) tweeted to support the NFCC's warning and said "there are many other ways to support the NHS".

The Peak District National Park tweeted: "There are lots of ways to show your support of our amazing keyworkers and NHS heroes, but releasing sky lanterns is not one of them. Clap loud and clap long this week, and send those sounds soaring into the sky instead."

"Please do not release lanterns in support of the NHS. These are a serious risk to our countryside and wildlife," added Bradgate Park Trust, in Leicestershire.
