Nottingham City Council and the Showmen's Guild said they opted to shelve this year's event after deciding a socially-distanced version would lack atmosphere and severely limit how many people could attend.

Previous reasons for cancellation include the Bubonic Plague and World War One and World War Two.

William Percival, chair of the Showmen's Guild, said: "We have been working closely with the council to consider potential options that would have enabled the safe staging of the fair, but following consultation with our members, we have jointly decided with the council not to proceed."

  5. Croatia holidaymakers pay out for routes homepublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 21 August 2020

    BBC News

British holidaymakers say they have been forced to pay hundreds of pounds for alternative routes back from Croatia, after finding affordable direct flights home before Saturday's quarantine deadline almost impossible to come by.

The government announced yesterday those travelling back to the UK from Croatia would have to self-isolate for 14 days.

Beccy Williams, a self-employed driving instructor from Oakham, Rutland, has decided not to return early from Slatine, where she is holidaying with her 10-year-old son and a group of friends.

"We were expecting it to be honest - we followed the numbers before we left on Tuesday," she told the Press Association news agency.

"Two of our party dropped out as they weren't prepared to take the risk of quarantine and two weeks off work."

Cheaper options for holidaymakers seeking to leave the country early include flights via Germany or Spain and trains across the continent.

One potential option, taking about 20 hours, is a train from the capital, Zagreb, through Villach and Salzburg in Austria, Munich in Germany, and on to Paris to catch the Eurostar to London.

Mrs Williams added: "I feel bad my pupils won't get their driving lessons until after September 14, but my son is having so much fun with his friends here that it's worth it."

  6. Derby care home without phone line after upgrade goes wrongpublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 21 August 2020

    BBC Radio Derby

A Derby care home has been without a phone line after an upgrade went wrong just before the coronavirus lockdown.

The phone system and internet connection at Derwent View, in Chaddesden - which cares for 19 residents with physical and mental disabilities - was to be upgraded by BT's Openreach in March.

Trevor Reed, whose son Jamie is a resident at the home, said it was a "ludicrous situation... and we need a landline desperately".

"Our son can't hold a mobile - it's too small - so the landline is very important in a care facility... and we are getting nowhere fast," he said.

The 39-year-old added temporary phone lines were set up by the company but they also failed.

Openreach, which apologised for the loss of the phone connection, said: "We've already been out once and although we were unable to gain access, our engineer carried out external work that we believed had fixed the issue.

"However, given they are still struggling, we have arranged for another visit this morning to get things sorted."

  9. Police use VR in Taser training in 'UK first'published at 12:22 British Summer Time 21 August 2020

    Sonia Kataria
    BBC News

Derbyshire Police says it is trialling a virtual reality platform to help train officers on the use of Tasers in what they claim is a UK first.

The kit, developed by AVRT, sees officers placed in different scenarios through a headset.

Police said AVRT has introduced the kit to staff as well as officers from other forces and over the next three months will "put the software through its paces" with a view to it becoming a national product.

Taser training manager Pete Moss says the result of the training may result in the force saving tens of thousands of pounds by fewer cartridges potentially being used.

"The realism really does have to be seen to be believed and the work the AVRT team have done to ensure that officers are able to use the same equipment they would when they are out on patrol has been absolutely outstanding," Mr Moss said.

"Being able to put officers in realistic situations – rather than the staged ones we set up as usual – really does take the training to a new level.

"With this we can help give officers more time in scenarios, which means they are even better prepared should they need to use a Taser in a critical moment."
