  12. Fears spike in Covid cases 'caused by last hurrah'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

A "last hurrah" before the second national lockdown started could be to blame for a spike in Leicestershire cases this week, the county's director of public health has said.

A total of 666 new cases were added to tolls in the city and county combined on Tuesday.

Mike Sandys told a health scrutiny commission meeting: "I fear it may be related to the inevitable outcome of the last hurrah of people shopping and socialising in the early part of last week until Wednesday."

He explained the latest data showed rates across the board in the 17 to 21 age group had been "significantly higher than the population as a whole".

Despite the high infection rate, Mr Sandys said the picture was "fairly stable" across the county, given increases in some areas and decreases in others.

A swan had a lucky escape after it was rescued from the inside lane of the A50 after it was spotted by a passing car.

Mrs Smith, from Ripley, said: "We drove past it and we couldn't just leave it there, so we drove back around and it was in the third lane of the A50.

"We pulled on to the hard shoulder and put on our hazard lights and started the rescue.

"I guided the swan back to the hard shoulder to let the traffic pass."

She said the swan didn't seem injured as it was flapping its wings and "standing tall".

She then wrapped it up in her coat and drove it to Linjoy Wildlife Sanctuary in Burton-upon-Trent.

Mrs Smith said the sanctuary told them later it "seemed excited to meet the other swans".

A spokesperson said: "The swan is a 2020-born bird and was a bit sore on his feet but is now doing fine.

"We plan to release it in the next week with some others we have."

It wasn't a boar-ing night in Beeston last night after a couple spotted a micro-pig on the loose.

Paul and Sarah Bowness had been on a walk about 20:30 when they saw the creature trotting among the bushes in the churchyard in Middle Street.

"It was having a nice time in the church garden eating the leaves, eating the grass and having a run around," said Mrs Bowness.

She told BBC Radio Nottingham she'd tried to call a local vet for advice while her husband posted a photo on a local Facebook group - and within 10 minutes the hog's owner had been found.

It emerged Darcy the pig had escaped from a garden through a hole in the fence.

"We tried to put a lead on her to try to walk her home but she wasn't having any of that," added Mrs Bowness.

"The owner came with a box of food and that was enough to entice her back home."
