    A woman has suffered "life-threatening injuries" in a crash on the A38 in Egginton.

    Police said a man and a child were also in the Audi Q3 when it collided with a lorry on the northbound carriageway at about 18:15 on Monday.

    They received less serious injuries.

    The road was closed for about seven hours while the scene was cleared.

    Police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone who was in the area at the time, to get in touch with them.

    A motorcyclist has suffered a broken arm and dislocated elbow after being deliberately pushed off his vehicle.

    Police said the assault took place on the A5 Watling Street in Burbage just before 17:00 on 18 April.

    The force said the motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, stopped when a red van pulled in front of him.

    A man then got out of the van and pushed him to the ground. The driver of the van then left the scene.

    Police would like to hear from anyone with information - especially if they witnessed the assault or recorded footage on a dashcam.

    Trees in Belper have been decorated with poems written by people in the community in a bid to help those who may be struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.

    The Poet-Trees project follows the internationally famous "Belper Moo" the town started at the beginning of lockdown.

    Carol Brewer, a local poet, came up with the idea after being inspired by a poem written by one of her friends.

    She made an appeal for contributions and received more than 100 poems from people aged five and above.

    Ms Brewer thinks the poetry could help people who are struggling with the affects of the pandemic.

    "Poetry has helped me through a lot of dark times and I find from a well being perspective, either writing it or reading it, it's got a real positive force to it.

    "I just felt now is really a time that we needed to start getting out safely again and it just seemed a good idea," she said.

    The death of a man in Leicester city centre is not being treated as suspicious, police have said.

    Leicestershire Police said the man was found injured in Charles Street shortly after 2.15pm yesterday afternoon.

    A 45-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were detained in connection with the death but have since been released with no further action.

    Police said a file was being prepared for the coroner.

    He has been released on police bail and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on 12 May.

    Scaffolding steps near a Nottingham canal that have prompted complaints from cyclists are due to be changed.

    Cyclists said they have struggled to navigate the "terrifyingly steep" temporary steps, on London Road, while development work takes place at the Island Quarter.

    Developers Conygar had said the scaffolding met safety requirements but added they were aware of the concerns and working on a solution.

    The River Canal Trust said: "We’ve been really concerned to see the difficulties that people using the towpath have faced and are pleased that new steps are now being designed."

    The spokesman said work to remove the existing steps was due to begin next week and diversion signs would be in place to advise people using the towpath to avoid the area until they are fixed.

    He added: "We hope that new steps can be in place as quickly as possible so that people can enjoy visiting the canal while the important works to transform the canal side take shape.”

    A warning has been issued after a driver was spotted changing a tyre next to the central reservation of the M1.

    Cameras picked up the silver car on the southbound carriageway near to junction 21 at about 14:00 on Monday.

    Despite a clear hard shoulder, the driver stopped in lane three and worked on the front wheel with traffic having to change lanes to avoid the obstruction.

    Highways England said officers were sent but the car had gone by the time they arrived.

    Regional operations manager, Mark Munnoch, said: “If you experience problems with your vehicle and you can’t leave the motorway you should always try to go left - to an emergency area, a hard shoulder, motorway services or slip road hard shoulder.

    “But if that is not possible and you have stopped in a live lane or feel your life is in danger you must stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt and hazard lights on and call 999 immediately.”
