As of Thursday, 1,042,531 doses have been handed out since the start of the roll-out, with 445,832 of these vaccines being second doses.

The news comes as it was announced anyone eligible to receive a vaccination will be able to get one at the Mansfield Vaccination Centre - in the former Wickes shop on Chesterfield Road South - and the Forest Recreation Ground in Nottingham this weekend.

Both the sites will be open from 08:00 to 16:00 on Saturday and Sunday, offering walk-in appointments for those eligible for their first dose.

This includes anyone aged 25 and over as well as those who are clinically vulnerable and carers.

    Reporter, BBC News Online

Despite plentiful cloud, some parts of the East Midlands caught a glimpse of the biggest partial solar eclipse since 2015.

This is caused by the Moon blocking some, but not all of the sun.

An impressive "ring of fire" effect - where the moon covers all but a thin circle of light - could best be seen in the Arctic.

But some managed to get an image of the event in the region, which was at its greatest extent just after 11:00.

  18. Boy 'chuffed' with Sir David Attenborough letter replypublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 9 June 2021

    BBC News

A five-year-old from Leicester was "over the moon" when he received a reply to a letter he wrote to Sir David Attenborough after visiting his childhood home.

Ishaan got in touch with the naturalist and broadcaster after visiting the house, now part of the University of Leicester campus and shared photos of his trip.

A week later Sir David replied saying: "I knew it was my old home as soon as I looked at the pictures."

His mother Priya said he pleaded for them to visit the house after he read about Sir David growing up in his home city.

"Ishaan said he wanted to talk to him and ask him questions and I said write to him and he might write back, not for a second thinking that Sir David actually would," she said.

"It's the first letter he's ever written other than to Santa and he was very chuffed to get a response.

"It's given him a boost and encouraged him to practise his writing, and now he wants to write to Boris Johnson and the Queen as well."
