  15. Covid: Health boss urges caution as restrictions easepublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 19 July 2021

    Rob Sissons
    East Midlands Today Reporter

The medical director of a Nottinghamshire hospital trust said staff were "planning for the worst but hoping for the best" as coronavirus restrictions in England are relaxed.

Dr David Selwyn, of Sherwood Forest NHS Trust, said the speed of any increase in hospital admissions would depend on how the public responds to the changes in the guidance, which include face coverings no longer being required by law and the re-opening of nightclubs.

"If everyone thinks it's 'Freedom Day' then we will see a rapid rise," he said.

Dr Selwyn, who oversees King's Mill Hospital, Newark Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital, warned a surge in admissions could result in planned operations being cancelled.

    Dr David Selwyn

Devinder Bittar, who said she'd had two Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines but still tested positive for Covid, is being treated at King's Mill.

The 44-year-old said she was against the easing of restrictions as the situation was "too dangerous... to just let everything go".

She added that testing positive was the "worst experience" and urged people to "continue to be careful, wearing masks and keeping your distance".

    Sharan Scott

Another Covid patient at the hospital, Sharan Scott, said the easing of rules was "absolutely ridiculous".

The 43-year-old added she was "very surprised" to have tested positive for the virus adding: "I keep to myself and keep my distance."

  16. 'Pingdemic' poses 'serious threat' to businessespublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 19 July 2021

    PA Media

The owner of two coffee shops in Derby says staff shortages caused by the so-called pingdemic are a "serious threat" to small businesses.

BEAR in the Derbion shopping centre is currently closed after several staff were told to self-isolate by the NHS Covid-19 app. The branch on Iron Gate also closed over the weekend but re-opened today.

    BEARImage source, BEAR

Craig Bunting, co-founder of BEAR, said the app had been "pinging everyone", with roughly 20 of the company's 100-strong workforce currently isolating.

Among them is a store manager who received a ping from the app just three days after returning to work from a previous period of isolation, as well as Mr Bunting himself.

He called for the implementation of a "test and release" system, allowing those who test negative to avoid isolation.

BEAR also has three other branches, in Uttoexter, Stone and Northwich, but Mr Bunting is worried about the future of the business as a whole.

"We have to really, really look at our numbers and work out how we're going to survive this," he said.

A group representing businesses in the East Midlands has called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to stick to his word and ensure the ending of lockdown restrictions is "irreversible".

East Midlands chamber chief executive Scott Knowles said today represents a "hugely important milestone" for businesses, after "many have had their hands tied for the past 16 months".

"We know this pandemic isn't over, and companies will be assessing to what extent they retain certain Covid measures – just as they have done throughout the course of the pandemic – as ensuring the health and safety of their employees and customers is paramount," he said.

"But as firms do their bit to keep the virus under control, we sincerely hope the prime minister keeps to his word that the end to lockdown restrictions will be 'irreversible', and that businesses can fully stand on their own two feet and realise the huge growth ambitions they have."
