He said: "Part of me can't believe it's happening for real this time.

"We've had to get prepared a few times and I guess this is the final time we'll have to do it and it's for real.

In England, there are now no limits on how many people can meet or attend events, nightclubs have reopened, and face coverings are not required by law.

However, Nottingham City Council has said people will be expected to continue to wear face masks in busy public places, especially when indoors in shops and on public transport, as well as when visitors go into council buildings.

Councillor David Mellen, leader of the authority, said: "I am deeply concerned that we are throwing away all protection against the virus. Rates of Covid-19 continue to rise in our city. More people are also being admitted to hospital.

"The vaccine offers greater protection from the virus, but many people in Nottingham still remain unvaccinated.

"I would like to offer a word of caution - let's continue to be careful. Just because restrictions are lifted, it does not mean that we are free from the threat of this virus.

"I will continue to wear my own face covering to help protect others. I would urge everyone to do the same."
