Spit hood decision 'better for police officers'published at 13:05 British Summer Time 4 April 2018
The Chairman of Lincolnshire Police Federation, the organisation which represents frontline officers, has been defending the use of spit hoods by the force.
Yesterday, senior officers announced 5,000 spit and bite guards are being introduced by the force in a bid to protect officers from attack.
Human rights groups say they're concerned by their use.
But Jon Hassall, from the Police Federation, says it's a sign of the times that such measures are necessary when officers face being spat at on a regular basis:
Quote MessageIt's disgusting. It's a feeling that stays with you even when you've washed it all off. These are not just to deal with spitting they are to deal with biting part of the use is to stop the marks and the broken skin. That has got to be better for the officer."
