About £140m is being invested in the tunnel which will carry a gas main from Paull, near Hull, to Goxhill in North Lincolnshire.

When finished it'll carry one fifth of Britain's gas, but Ofgem says National Grid hasn't demonstrated the work is in the best interests of consumers.

National Grid says the project has already been approved by the government.

Humber tunnel project manager Steve Ellison says their investment will only be a "tiny" part of consumer bills.

    Quote Message

This is a major project, it's massively important. It's vital that this pipeline is replaced because it takes 20% of the UK's gas. The project we're undertaking at the moment ensures gas supply is secure now and into the future for Yorkshire and beyond."
