  13. Man detained in psychiatric unit over fire at family homepublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 16 August 2018

A Lincolnshire man who set fire to his family home after developing delusional thoughts has been detained in a secure psychiatric unit.

James McDonald, 31, poured petrol around the house, on Meeres Lane, in Kirton, near Boston, on 18 May 2017 while his mother and aunt slept.

He then set fire to the house after putting the family dog and cat outside before locking the door and standing outside with a knife.

McDonald's aunt woke up to the fire and got her sister out of the house.

Lincoln Crown Court heard how McDonald's health had been deteriorating for two years.

He was examined by doctors after the fire, who found him to have paranoid schizophrenia.

McDonald pleaded guilty to arson endangering the lives of Susan McDonald and Helen Seymour and possessing a bladed article.

Passing sentence, Judge John Pini QC made a restricted hospital order, rather than a jail sentence, which means McDonald will be detained in a secure psychiatric unit.

Mrs McDonald said she felt no anger towards her son who she said "desperately needs help".
