  4. Tighter rules on home schooling spark concernpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

There are concerns in Lincolnshire that plans to tighten the rules on home schooling would be an unnecessary intrusion.

    Home schooling

Last month in the House of Lords a Home Education Bill received its third reading.

It calls for parents to register their children with their local authority and for closer monitoring of children.

Lord Soley, who proposed the bill, says some parents can struggle to give their children the best education at home without access to equipment such as laboratories and musical instruments.

Kat Soutar's two children are among the 925 children who are educated at home in Lincolnshire.

She says increased bureaucracy could deter many parents:

It follows a survey carried out by the New Local Government Network of local authorities across the UK, which found only a third feel they will be able to provide discretionary services beyond 2023.

Mr Hill said he's made a strong case to the government for fairer funding for rural counties, where the costs of delivering services are considerably higher.
