Sepsis happens when the body overreacts to an infection and it's believed to kill more than 50,000 people in the UK every year.

But researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow have announced they've come up with a new rapid test for diagnosing sepsis which they believe could save thousands of lives.

Phil Crow set up the Lincolnshire Sepsis Support Group after contracting the infection during a routine operation. He then spent eight weeks in intensive care and several weeks on the ward.

Mr Crow says the new test could be great news:

    Quote Message

Time's massive, it's the most important thing. The sooner you get it, the less time you're going to spend in intensive care. If this university has come up with a quickfire test, that's got to be brilliant."

    ParkingImage source, Google Street View

Number plate recognition technology was brought in at Lincoln, Boston and Grantham hospitals late last year, but a series of "teething problems" have left nurses, doctors and other workers with fines.

Some staff have been fined several times a week.

This is usually because they've finished shifts late or the system hasn't recognised their staff status.

    Quote Message

If you're in the operating theatre you can't just drop out and move your car. You've got to stay there until the end of the period and if you run over your time you end up getting a fine on your way out."

    Steve Syson, Unite Union

A petition has been launched calling for charges for staff to be scrapped.

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust says it is aware of staff being fined and says it is advising those who think they are being treated unfairly to go through an appeal process.

The trust also says staff need to ensure their car is registered properly with the system and that they park correctly.
