    Local Democracy Reporting Service

People are more likely to catch coronavirus at one of Lincolnshire's hospitals than at many other hospitals in the country, new data suggests.

    Lincoln County HospitalImage source, Google

The Telegraph has reported that more than 10,000 people nationally caught the virus while in hospital for other illnesses, external between 1 August and 29 November.

In Lincolnshire, a total of 29.5% of patients who've had a positive test for Covid-19 at either Boston Pilgrim Hospital or Lincoln County Hospital picked it up while they were in hospital, according to the Telegraph's figures.

That puts United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) in the top 10 for hospital infection rates in the country.

Responding to the figures, ULHT chief executive Andrew Morgan told BBC Radio Lincolnshire it is a problem.

The trust's hospitals face "overcrowding of A&E, lack of side rooms, having to move patients around the site", Mr Morgan says.

"Yes, it's something we work really hard on, but figures are figures."

  12. Covid survivor says Christmas with relatives is 'too risky'published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2020

A Lincolnshire coronavirus survivor who spent a month fighting the virus in hospital says he won't be spending Christmas with his family.

    George Barker

George Barker from Sibsey near Boston, became extremely poorly in the spring.

He has only just recovered and is back at work, but says it's still too risky to meet up with his relatives.

He said: "The kids have newly had babies and they don't really want to take a chance, I think we'll just be having a quiet one.

"I don't think people are taking it seriously. They're just thinking it won't happen to them, but I've seen it happen to lots of people.

"I think it should be compulsory that people should wear masks in the streets because you can walk by people and get their breath on the way by."

The University of LincolnImage source, Google

Lincolnshire Police were called to an address on Newland in Lincoln last Friday and found the party in "full swing".

Ch Supt Jon McAdam said: “It seems the organiser had decided to ignore the rules and regulations set out by the Covid-19 legislation, which says that gatherings of more than 30 people are not allowed.

"When we got there, there were at least 70 people. It was a clear breach of the rules."

Ch Supt McAdam added that the Lincolnshire force only uses its coronavirus powers "as a last resort".

"But in a situation such as this, in a time now when it’s quite clear everyone knows the rules, there was no way we could have done anything other than hand out the maximum penalty."

A spokesman for the University of Lincoln said they deplored the "irresponsible" behaviour of the students involved.

The university took the matter extremely seriously and had launched an internal investigation, he added.

New foot and cycle bridges have been built over Hawthorn Road, Greetwell Road, Bloxholm Lane and the South Delph alongside the River Witham. Crossing points have also been constructed at each of the new bypass roundabouts.

The new paths and bridges have also been built with all non-motorised users in mind, including horse-riders, and a new underpass has been built at Lincoln Road, the council says.

Councillor Richard Davies says: "All of this new infrastructure will help support Lincoln's new transport strategy.

"One of our goals is to get residents and visitors to leave their cars at home and travel more sustainably when possible.

"Hopefully, the new infrastructure we've built as part of the bypass scheme will encourage more people to do just that by providing more options for getting into and around the Greater Lincoln area by foot or cycle without having to use fast and busy roads."

The new bypass is set to open by the end of the year.

Officers from the RSPCA were called after a homeowner heard scuffling behind their kitchen wall and then spotted an owl through a hole above their kitchen cabinets.

RSPCA inspector Kathleen Burris was called to the property, on Mayfair Drive, on Friday, 4 December along with a crew from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Insp Burris said: "This poor owl had fallen down an old chimney in the kitchen and was trapped in a pipe.

"We could see the poor fella through a hole in the kitchen but it was too tight for the owl to squeeze through.

"We carefully tried to open the space in the kitchen, but he dropped to the bottom of the pipe. We then had to remove a few bricks on the outside wall which gave us enough space to break the pipe and get him out."

The owl has since been checked over by a vet and has been released back into the wild, Insp Burris added.
