  4. Engine fire damages bus in Streathampublished at 17:38

    Transport for London says it is investigating after an engine fire on the number 109 in Streatham High Road, south London, before midday today.

    London Fire Brigade said half the bus was damaged and no-one was injured.

    Transport for London said that 15-20 people were evacuated.

    "Engine fires aren't exactly common but they do happen," a spokesman said.

  6. Tottenham girls to get firefighting lessonspublished at 17:20

    London Fire Brigade, external is launching a special fire fighting course aimed at teenage girls. 

    Fourteen girls from Tottenham aged between 14 and 17 will be able to take part in the Local Intervention Fire Education, or LIFE, external course.

    The scheme will aim to boost young people’s confidence and build aspirations, through firefighting training techniques.

  7. Primary school orders children to walk with their hands behind their backspublished at 17:09

    Parents are preparing a petition against a “repressive” new school rule which demands that children walk with their hands clasped behind their backs at all times, Camden New Journal reports., external

    Pupils at St George the Martyr Primary School in Holborn have been told they must adopt the pose – known as the “University Walk” – when walking down corridors, the newspaper reported.

    The annual Wrap Up London, external campaign is accepting old coats to help those in need during the winter months.

    People can donate coats until 13 November at a number of London stations.

    The charity is also looking for volunteers to help with the campaign.

    A snake is on the loose in a student union building at King's College London (KCL), the university believes.

    It confirmed a non-venomous milk snake (like the one pictured) escaped on Friday after its owner visited Boland House, part of the campus near London Bridge.

    The building is five storeys and staff members "scoured" the property over the weekend, said Karen Hoy, KCL spokeswoman.

    The student newspaper broke the news, external today.  

    "It's likely that the snake will head off to somewhere warm to enjoy its freedom," Ms Hoy added.

  12. 'Highest number of teenage murders since 2010'published at 16:23

    Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe has been at the Home Affairs Select Committee, external.

    He says there have been 15 teenage murders in London so far this year, the highest number since 2010. 

    "Often gang warfare" is the reason, he says.  

  13. Wifi reaches 250 Tube stationspublished at 16:15

    Ultrafast WiFi connectivity has been expanded to 100 more Tube stations - which brings the total number of stations with the service to 250. 

    Transport for London, external and Virgin Media joined forces to expand service which can reach speeds of more than 100Mbps.

  14. Watch: City worker tackles robber after smash-and-grab raidpublished at 16:00

    Three robbers have admitted carrying out a series of raids on jewellers and money transfer shops in London and Manchester.

    One of the robbers was caught when City workers and a plain-clothes police officer blocked his escape after a robbery which was captured in mobile phone footage by a passer-by.

    Over the course of a year the gang struck at seven stores in London and Manchester.

    It is estimated they stole cash, watches and jewellery worth £500,000 in total.

  15. Council rejects Peckham car park planpublished at 15:48

  16. Clapham Common south side fire damages buildingpublished at 15:35

    About 70 firefighters and officers tackled a fire in south-west London last night. 

    The basement and the third floor of the building on Clapham Common South side were completely damaged by the blaze.

    London Fire Brigade was called at 20:05 and the fire was under control at 03:16.

    Station Manager Terry Gooding said: “The alarm was raised by a neighbour who saw smoke and thankfully there was nobody in the house at the time and there were no reports of any injuries."

    The thief who stole a laptop used in the funeral of a six-year-old boy"masqueraded as a genuine mourner", the Reverend Desmond Hall of Pentecostal City Mission Church tells me.

    The suspect, described as having a distinctive limp, "came in the building bold as brass acting as if he was part of everything".

    Norris Tashan-Javan Martin, known as TJ, had been ill since he was a baby with a rare disease.
