    A band of heavy rain will spread east throughout the afternoon.

  2. London terror plot foiled after 'tweet asked for target suggestions', court hearspublished at 14:42

    A terror plot to bomb the London Underground or Westfield shopping centre was foiled shortly before the 10th anniversary of the 7 July attacks, the Old Bailey has heard. 

    Counter terrorism officers were alerted to the plan after Mohammed Rehman, under the name Silent Bomber, asked Twitter followers for advice on which of the two targets to choose, jurors were told. 

    Rehman, 25, and his wife Sana Ahmed Khan, 24, are charged with preparing terrorist acts. He is also charged with possessing an article for terrorist purposes. 

    Rehman, of Radstock Road, Reading, and Khan of Hutton Close, Reading, deny all charges. 

  3. MP and council 'lack stance' over Heathrow expansionpublished at 14:27

    Campaigners fighting Heathrow expansion in Surrey have demanded their MP and council take a stance on the issue - as a government decision looms.

    The newly-formed group in Elmbridge, called Rage, opposes flight path changes and an expansion. The group says it's shocked Esher and Walton Conservative MP Dominic Raab has not set out his views and Elmbridge Council, external has only just formed a taskforce. 

    Both council and MP said they had not yet reached an official view.

  4. Eurostar travellers asked for Paris attack knowledgepublished at 14:05

    Anti-terror police, external have been asking people returning from France for information about the Paris attacks. 

    Travellers who had taken the Eurostar from Paris to St Pancras International following the massacre were handed pamphlets asking for eyewitness accounts, images and video which could help investigations.

    Transport for London (TfL) has announced it has prosecuted 46 minicab touts in the last six months - a record number. 

    But black cab drivers say it's nowhere near enough, and more needs to be done to regulate the sector.

    Paedophile pop star Gary Glitter - who was found guilty of sexually abusing three schoolgirls - has lost a Court of Appeal challenge against his conviction.

    Glitter, now 71, from Marylebone, central London, argued he didn't have a fair trial back in February when he was jailed for 16 years.

  9. Cult leader 'surrounded himself with women'published at 12:50

    A communist cult leader surrounded himself with women because he believed they were "the weakest link of bourgeois culture" a former follower of his has told Southwark Crown Court.

    The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said Aravindan Balakrishnan, 75, wanted to create "a cadre of women soldiers who could withstand the sugar-coated bullets of bourgeois culture".

    She previously said Mr Balakrishnan sexually assaulted and  had "dehumanised" and "psychologically stripped" her through a barrage of verbal abuse. 

    Mr Balakrishnan, of Enfield, denies seven counts of indecent assault, four counts of rape against two women during the 1970s and 1980s, three counts of actual bodily harm, cruelty to a child under 16 and false imprisonment. 

    The trial continues.

  10. Labour's Cooper 'disagrees' with Corbyn's shoot-to-kill viewpublished at 12:35

    Labour's Yvette Cooper, the former shadow home secretary, has said she disagrees with her party's leader, and Islington North MP, Jeremy Corbyn's stance over stopping shoot-to-kill terrorists if there is a threat to life.

    She said: "We've got a long standing legal framework which allows for the use of lethal force where we have an imminent threat to life... That legal framework is important and needs to continue... I disagree with what he said yesterday.

    "It has to remain Labour's policy supporting the police and security services in a very difficult job that they need to do."

  13. Teenage girl killed in rush hour lorry crashpublished at 11:40

    A teenage girl has died after being hit by a lorry in New Malden during rush hour earlier this morning.

    The girl, reportedly aged 13, was hit by the heavy goods vehicle on Lime Grove, the Met, external said.

    London Ambulance Service, external and London's Air Ambulance, external were called out but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin are yet to be told.
