  1. Vauxhall nightclub bouncers 'pinned down and killed man'published at 09:26

    Three bouncers killed a man they held down for "around six minutes" outside a south London nightclub, a court heard.

    Post-mortem tests found Adam Hird, 30, was asphyxiated as he was held down after trying to get into the No 65 club in Vauxhall, a jury was told. 

    Mark Pantallaresco, 51, Lewis Thorne, 22, and Sebastiano Ragusa, 31, are on trial at the Old Bailey accused of Mr Hird's manslaughter by gross negligence.

    They deny the charges.

    Mr Thorne is from Meads Way, in Brentwood, Essex. Mr Ragusa is from Lewisham, south London, and Mr Pantallaresco is from Tadworth, in Surrey.

    Scotland Yard has apologised to the family of a police informant for "shortcomings" in the original investigation into his death.

    Kester David, 53, from Wood Green, was found badly burned under a bridge in Palmers Green in 2010.

    On Monday the police said they had closed the reinvestigation into his death and that the Met commissioner had met Mr David's family to apologise personally.

    Where children grow up in England is more likely to determine success or failure at school than in previous generations, according to research carried out by The Social Market Foundation.

    The foundation has examined test results of cohorts born in 1970 and 2000 and found regional differences have become much greater.

    Pupils' results are highest in London and lowest in Yorkshire and Humber.
