  2. Knightsbridge balcony deaths: Company charged with manslaughterpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 11 May 2016

    A company has been charged with corporate manslaughter after two employees fell to their deaths from a first floor balcony as they hoisted a sofa up from the pavement. 

    Polish nationals Tomasz Procko, 22, and Karol Symanski, 29, were killed in Cadogan Square, Knightsbridge, west London, on November 21 2014.

    The CPS has also charged the company Martinisation with two health and safety offences.

    "I'm not sure why adding two more inches to my height makes me look more professional," says a woman who was turned away from a temp job in the City for not wearing high heels.

    Nicola Thorp, 27, says when she asked if a man would be expected to do the same shift in heels, she was laughed at.

  4. Murder accused looked for fights 'to improve his mood'published at 13:57 British Summer Time 11 May 2016

    The father accused of beating to death six-year-old Ellie Butler in a fit of rage admitted looking out for fights as a way to "improve his mood", the Old Bailey court heard. 

    Ben Butler is on trial at the Old Bailey accused of murdering his daughter in October 2013, 11 months after winning a custody battle to get her back from care. 

    The 36-year-old, of Sutton, south west London, denies murder.

    The prosecution say Mr Butler had a volatile character and was frequently on the verge of losing his temper. They cite abusive text messages to his partner Jennie Gray, 36, in which he appears enraged and on the brink of violence.

  6. Women in heels petition reaches more than 10,000published at 13:16 British Summer Time 11 May 2016

    The petition calling for the law to be changed so women cannot be forced to wear high heels to work has now reached more than 10,000 signatures, so the government will have to respond.  

    It comes as a receptionist was sent home from work for refusing to wear them.

    Manchester United players screamed, swore, laughed and hid on the floor as the team's bus was attacked on the way into Upton Park for Tuesday's Premier League match at West Ham United.

    A 28-year-old man shot dead by police as they foiled an attempt to help a prisoner escape, was not holding an imitation gun found inside a car used in the plot a court's been told. 

    Woolwich Crown Court heard that as police moved in the gun was found in the back of the car. 

    Jermaine Baker was sitting in the front passenger seat when was killed by a single shot from a firearms officer.

    An orchestra that plays in a multi-storey car park in south London has won a top prize at the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards.

    The Multi-Story Orchestra was praised for its "ingenuity and impact in the local community" as it picked up the audience engagement prize.  

  11. Gatwick Airport slams Heathrow's environment promisepublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 11 May 2016

    Gatwick Airport has responded to Heathrow's claim that it would mitigate any environmental concerns there may be if it were to be able to go ahead with a third runway.

    In a statement, CEO Stewart Wingate said if Gatwick to expand, it would be without "the noise impacts of Heathrow, without breaking air quality limits, at half the cost and with no public subsidy". 

  12. Female temp worker 'sent home for refusing to wear high heels'published at 11:34 British Summer Time 11 May 2016

    A London receptionist was sent home from work after refusing to wear high heels, it has emerged.

    Temp worker Nicola Thorp, 27, from Hackney, arrived at finance company PwC to be told she had to wear shoes with a "2in to 4in heel".

    When she refused and complained that male colleagues were not asked to do the same, she was sent home without pay.

    Outsourcing firm Portico said it set the uniform rules for staff supplied to PwC but it would now review its guidelines.

  13. Gang member 'used smuggled phone' in prison van escape plotpublished at 11:20

    I'm at the Wood Green escape trial of two men who are accused of trying to help free a gang leader from a prison van on its way to court in Wood Green, north London.

    Izzet Eren used a smuggled phone to text the number of the prison van he was in to his cousin, Ozcan Eren, 31, who is accused of planning to spring him.

    He then called Nathan Mason who was in the ‘mission’ car waiting to hold up the prison van to give him registration number.

    More than 1,800 suspected and convicted criminals facing charges including murder, rape and child sex offences are on the run in London after skipping bail, the BBC has learned. 

    Some of the outstanding warrants date back to the 1980s and victims' charities say as a result potentially dangerous and violent criminals remain at large leaving victims in fear.

  15. West Ham violence: Four police officers injured while three fans arrested during matchpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 11 May 2016

    Four police officers suffered minor injuries as a result of objects thrown towards the Manchester United team bus ahead of their game at West Ham last night.

    It was the last one at Upton Park before they move to the Olympic Stadium.

    Nobody has been arrested in connection with the damage caused to the bus however three men were arrested during the course of the match: A 20-year-old on suspicion of affray, while a 47-year-old and 18-year-old were arrested for pitch incursion.

    The Met says they were called to Holloway Road just after 08:30 following reports of an item of "unattended luggage" on board the number 271 bus.

    BBC correspondent Philippa Thomas is at Holloway Road in north London which has been closed by the Met Police after a suspect package was believed to be found on a bus.

    She said she heard a controlled explosion however the force could not confirm this but added that this was one way of dealing with a suspect package.
