  3. City Airport protesters chargedpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 7 September 2016

    Nine people have been charged following a protest at London City Airport that stopped all flights.

    The demonstrators from Black Lives Matter campaign group got onto the airport's runway on yesterday morning.

    They have been charged with aggravated trespass and being unlawfully airside within a restricted area of an aerodrome.

    They are:

    • William Pettifer, 27, of Radford Mill Farm, Radford, Nottinghamshire 
    •  Esme Waldron, 23, of Walmer Crescent, Brighton
    • Sama Baka, 27, of a houseboat on the River Stort, Roydon in Essex
    • Natalie Fiennes, 25 of Thurleigh Road, Wandsworth, south-west London
    • Alex Etchart, 26 of a houseboat on the River Stort, Roydon
    • Deborah Francis-Grayson, 31, of St. Mary's Road, Slough
    • Richard Collet-White, 23, of Spring Road, Kempston, Beds
    • Ben Tippet, 24, of Thurleigh Road, Wandsworth
    • Sam Lund-Harket, 32 of a houseboat on the River Stort, Roydon

    They have been released on bail to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on 14 September.

    Ticket offices were closed by Transport for London to save £50m a year

    Announcing the review London mayor Sadiq Khan said with the launch of Night Tube people need to feel safe.

    "With the launch of the Night Tube, and our continuing modernisation of London's transport infrastructure, we particularly need to ensure disabled people get the right assistance when they need it, and make sure no-one feels unsafe around our more quiet stations late at night." 

    The ticket office closures had prompted strikes in the past but Transport for London said it would save £50m annually.

    TSSA union general secretary Manuel Cortes said he welcomed the mayor's move to "reverse a stupid decision by Boris Johnson".

    "An increase in numbers of passengers whilst axing the ticket offices and putting customer service staff out on to the platforms has increased stresses on the network and made the Tube a less-safe space to work and certainly we have grave concerns about security," he said.

    The Mayor of London has ordered a review of the closure of Tube ticket offices in the capital. 

    Sadiq Khan said independent watchdog London TravelWatch will examine the impact of the closures on passengers and concerns about the move. 

    The closures, agreed under previous mayor Boris Johnson, led to an industrial dispute with unions.

    London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticised the decision to close one of the capital's biggest nightclubs and warned of the decline of the city's nightlife. 

    Mr Khan said he was "disappointed" Fabric nightclub, Islington Council and the Metropolitan Police had failed to reach an agreement, after police raised concerns about drugs on the premises. 

    The council revoked the Farringdon venue's licence in the early hours of today, after finding it had a "culture of drug use" which staff were "incapable of controlling". 

    The decision has been labelled "archaic" and "a devastating blow for London" by figures from the music world. 

    The club closed temporarily after the deaths of two teenagers from suspected drug overdoses earlier this year, and last month the Met applied to the council for the licence to be reviewed.

    Southern, external rail passengers in London and the South East are facing disruption to their journeys as a new, two-day rail strike has started.

    The RMT union, external is in dispute with Southern's parent company Govia Thameslink, external (GTR) over the role of guards on new trains.
