    “Investigations into what caused this tragic incident continue, and it is vital that we learn the lessons as quickly as possible to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

    The British Transport Police has said following the tram derailment in Croydon yesterday, it can confirm six men and one woman died.

    "We are working with the Coroner to identify these seven people and their families are being supported by specially trained officers.

    Bernice Rooke, 66, has lived next to the tram tracks in Croydon for 15 years and said she has "never heard it so quiet" as today.

    She said: "The first thing you notice is the stillness. Usually it's mayhem out here in the morning - buses, cars, trams, kids... 

    "Yesterday it was chaos, sirens everywhere, it seemed like there were hundreds at some points. 

    "I knew something was wrong when the noise stopped near my house. 

    "But today is different, like nothing else here before." 

    Dozens of floral tributes have been left near the scene by well-wishers. 

    One bouquet was left with a card that read: "To the families of all the lives lost. My deepest sympathy from a Croydon resident and my family. RIP. God Bless xxxx".

    The head of 19-year-old Dane Chinnery's former school Meridian High School in New Addington has paid tribute to the first named victim of the tram crash.

    Martin Giles said: "The staff and students at Meridian High School have been heartbroken this morning to hear that a former student died yesterday.

    "We have extended our deepest sympathies to the family and do so to the wider community, who have all been so affected.

    "To our knowledge, at least three other former students have have also been injured.

    "All of the staff in the school shares their pain at this difficult time.

    "As a school our first priority is to look after our students. As the full extent of what happened yesterday transpires, we are aware that many students have been directly or indirectly affected.

    "We have made safe spaces and counsellors available for those students who need some time out or support.

    "The victims and their families are in our thoughts and prayers and we stand ready to support the community in any way we can."

    A West Ham fan behind a parody video, which shows supporters welcoming a black man onto a train, says he made the video to show that not all football fans are racist.

    The video spoofs the recent alleged racist incident on the Paris Metro where a black man was apparently prevented from boarding by Chelsea fans.

    Aaron, the man behind the West Ham video, said he believes football cannot tackle racism "on its own" and that the "mindset" needs to be addressed in "schools and colleges", as well as viral parody videos.

    Stoke's three first-half goals stunned the Gunners who staged a brilliant yet unsuccessful fightback at the Britannia Stadium.

    Peter Crouch slotted in after only 19 seconds, before Bojan sidefooted in the second and Jon Walters crashed in to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time. Santi Cazorla scored from the spot and Aaron Ramsey volleyed in from a corner soon after to give the London side hope. But Calum Chambers was sent off after a second yellow late on as Stoke held on.
