LU workers to be balloted for strike action over safety rowpublished at 09:27 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016
Hundreds of London Underground workers are to be balloted for strikes in a row over safety.
Members of the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) will vote in the coming weeks on whether to launch a campaign of industrial action.
The result is due at the end of the month, threatening walkouts in the run up to Christmas.
The union said its members had been subjected to increased threats and abuse since a programme of ticket office closures started.
Steve Griffiths, Transport for London's chief operating officer for London Underground, said: "Our staff work hard to serve the millions of customers that pass through the Tube and rail network every day.
"Everyone has the right to go about their work without fear or intimidation and we do not tolerate any form of verbal or physical assault on our staff.
"Our campaign against workplace violence sends a clear message that any assault on staff will be fully investigated and we work closely with the British Transport Police to bring perpetrators to justice."
The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) is currently balloting its Tube station members for strikes over cuts, with the result due later today.
