There was no publicity and no fanfare as Croydon's tramsystem got up and running again.

I was on one of the first trams out of New Addington.

On the tram passengers were glad the trams were running but it was bittersweet.

Some said they were a little nervous, some said they were still shocked.

And as the tram crept round the bend of the derailment - marked only by orange traffic cones - the carriage fell silent.

Two-week-old kittens abandoned in a London stairwell have found a new mother in the shape of Peppa the Pug at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, external.

Peppa was also found as a stray and was brought into Battersea in April.

Staff at the charity were worried she had been used for backstreet breeding - her body showed signs of bearing mulptiple litters and mastitis, an infection of the mammary glands.

Now, recovering under the specialist care of Louise Taylor at the charity, Peppa has turned her affection to Conker, Pickle and Pumpkin.

Louise said: “We knew Peppa had been a mother before and she’s a natural. She won’t let Conker, Pickle and Pumpkin out of her sight and is constantly washing them and making sure they’re all clean.

"It’s been lovely to see the four of them together, especially knowing these three kittens had such an unlucky start in life.”

The refurbishment of Buckingham Palace is set to cost taxpayers an estimated £369m over 10 years, it has been announced.

The work will replace the Palace's electrics, heating and plumbing, much of which dates back to the 1950s.

The work is described by officials as "future proofing" the Palace. An independent report said not doing the work would leave the building vulnerable to the risk of fire.

The most urgent works are planned to start next April. Officials say once complete the Palace will become more energy efficient and improve its facilities to allow more people to visit.

  20. Croydon tram service to resume after fatal derailmentpublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2016

    Tram

The Croydon tram service is set to reopen later, just over a week after the derailment in which seven people died.

The service will resume this afternoon, Transport for London was expected to announce.

Investigators have said the tram was travelling at three-and-a-half times the speed limit when the crash happened near the Sandilands stop.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the tram, which was carrying about 60 people, was doing 43.5mph in a 12mph zone.

In its interim report, it said there was no evidence of any track defects, or obstructions on the track.

The investigation also found no malfunction of the braking system. The tram derailed on Wednesday morning last week, shortly after coming out of a tunnel with a 50mph speed limit.
