Secondary schools are facing significant challenges in recruiting enough teachers to keep up with rising pupil numbers, a Government spending watchdog has warned.

Tens of thousands of teachers left England's schools before reaching retirement age last year, and headteachers are finding it difficult to fill jobs with good quality candidates, according to a new report by the National Audit Office (NAO).

There were differences across the country, with the North East having the lowest proportion of schools reporting at least one opening (16.4% of secondaries), compared to 30.4% of schools in outer London and 26.4% in the South East.

The NAO concludes that the Department for Education (DfE) cannot show that its attempts to keep teachers in the classroom are having a positive impact and are good value for money.

  16. Whipps Cross Hospital 'improving' two years after special measurespublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    Whipps CrossImage source, PA

An east London hospital has begun to show signs of improvement two years after being placed in special measures.

An unannounced inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in May found Whipps Cross hospital, part of the Bart's Health NHS Trust, requires improvement.

The hospital had previously been rated inadequate in July 2016.

Barts Health NHS Trust remains in special measures, as it has been since May 2015.

In its latest inspection the CQC looked at three core services at Whipps Cross: end of life care, outpatients and diagnostics services and surgery.

Since the CQC inspection in May 2017 Whipps Cross Hospital has:

    • Opened a new eight-bedded High Dependency Unit to care for patients after surgery, reducing the number of people staying overnight in surgery recovery areas so more operations begin on time
    • Invested in providing A&E patients with faster care and next-day tests; freeing up beds for those most seriously unwell.
    • Improved the safety of theatres including installing new equipment and furniture, with a £1.2m theatre refurbishment to take place by April 2018.

The first two inspections were rated as "requires improvement" but the CQC still rated surgery as "inadequate".
