  16. Khan: Police numbers could drop to 15-year lowpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    BBC News, London

    Sadiq Khan

The number of police in London could drop to a 15 year low to a funding squeeze, the Mayor of London has warned.

During Mayor's Question Time Sadiq Khan said: "Crime in our city has been increasing in volume and complexity.

"If the government doesn’t provide extra funding we could see the number of Met Police officers fall below 30,000 for the first time since 2003."

The Metropolitan Police's budget will be flat in cash terms, but the Mayor of London and the Met Police calculate rising costs will mean savings of £400m will need to be found by 2020-21.

As of March 2017 the Met Police has 31,517 full time officers, but has lost 360 officers since 2015 - when current police budgets were set.
