  1. Heathrow expansion will "suffocate" regional airport growth - MPpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

Heathrow expansion risks "suffocating" the growth of regional airports, a former transport secretary has warned.

Conservative Justine Greening told the Commons that Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Bournemouth would all have fewer international flights than otherwise by 2030 if Heathrow was allowed to develop a third runway.

Ms Greening, whose Putney constituency lies under the Heathrow flight path and who also opposes the plan, questioned how this would help investment in the regions.

Theresa May defended the proposal and insisted people in Newquay had welcomed the news during a recent visit she made to Cornwall.

MPs are expected to hold a vote soon on the Heathrow plan.

Transport for London (TfL) has unveiled a new fleet of overground trains. The new lines will be launched in November and will initially run on the Gospel Oak to Barking route, before being rolled out nationally.

They will then be brought onto the Watford to Euston routes and on services out of Liverpool Street to Cheshunt, Chingford and Enfield Town.

The Class 710 trains will also be used on the extension to Barking Riverside when it is completed in 2021.

Jonathan Fox, director of rail and sponsored services at TfL, said: "Our new state-of-the-art British built London Overground trains will be an exciting addition to London's transport network and help boost capacity on some of the most busy and popular lines.

"Over the summer, the new trains will undergo final rigorous testing and drivers will complete extensive training. We are now planning for the first trains to enter passenger service on the Gospel Oak to Barking route by November."

The trains are being designed and built by Bombardier Transport in Derby and will be operated by Arriva Rail London (ARL) on behalf of TfL. TfL said that the trains are made from "strong but lightweight" material which will make them more energy efficient.

Final approval of the work carried out by Network Rail to make the Gospel Oak to Barking route live was completed last week.

Drivers will undergo training over the summer before the first train enters passenger service.

Commuters will be able to get on new double decker buses next year. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced the creation of the largest double decker bus fleet in Europe.

Sixty-eight new electric buses will join TfL's fleet this summer.

Mr Khan, said: "Leaders from across England and Wales have never met in such numbers to tackle our nation's toxic air quality. It shows how serious our problem is and how committed we are to tackling it.

"I'm delighted to be able to announce a Europe-leading new fleet of electric double-decker buses too.

"We're doing all we can to improve our air quality and we need the government to match our ambition to solve this national health crisis." Research from the universities of Oxford and Bath has claimed that poor air quality contributes to 40,000 premature deaths each year.

Leaders at the summit will also say that they want to play their part nationally to improve air quality and prioritise action to reduce transport emissions as well as creating a Clean Air Act that enforces strict air pollution limits.

Mr Khan will also be calling on the government to ban the sale of new diesel and petrol vehicles by 2030.

By next year TfL aims to have 240 electric buses running on their network and for all new double-decker buses to be zero-emissions or a hybrid of diesel and electric.

  11. Lewisham sets new refugee resettlement targetspublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Lewisham Council has pledged to resettle 100 new refugee families in the next four years - more than any other London borough.

The families, who are mostly from Syria, are chosen because they have survived violence or torture, have other special protection needs or are particularly at risk.

The council helps families find housing, children settle into new schools and adults find work through a refugee resettlement scheme, with support from Lewisham Citizens, local faith groups and the local Amnesty International branch.

Local residents have also donated toys and clothes, household items and furniture to the scheme, as well as provided homes.

Programme manager Kris Gavin said the scheme was successful so far, and already supports 15 families. "At present it's working well, there are issues sometimes. It is more difficult when you have arrived at 14 or 15 and you are landed with exams," he said.
