  3. Visits to foodbanks rise in Camden 'more than two thirds'published at 17:52 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

The number of visits people made to foodbanks in Camden for emergency food parcels increased by more than two thirds last year, according to new figures from the Trussell Trust.

The charity, which runs 400 foodbanks across the country, recorded 6,150 foodbank visits in Islington between April 2017 and April 2018, up by 2,492 - or 68% - on the previous year's 3,658.

This is more than three times the London average of a 21% rise over the same period.

Camden's Liberal Democrats said these "appalling figures" are "a shameful indictment of today's fractured society", and likened the national government to Marie Antoinette.

The data includes a rise in foodbank use for both adults and children, with the number of children visiting foodbanks up from 1,022 in 2016/17 to 1,607 in 2017/18.

The number of adults rose from 2,636 to 4,543 over the same period.

This places the council at ninth out of 42 London boroughs for the highest number of visits to foodbanks in that financial year.

  4. Going underground: The Windrush arrivals' subterranean dormitoriespublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

When Caribbean migrants stepped off the SS Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948, many had nowhere to live. The lack of housing in London following World War Two meant even temporary accommodation was in short supply.

So 236 migrants from the merchant vessel were bussed from Tilbury docks in Essex to Clapham, where for two shillings and sixpence a week they got food and a bed in a shelter underneath Clapham South Tube station.

The underground passages had been fitted with bunk beds and washing facilities when they were used as civilian shelters during the war.

Life in the windowless underworld was basic, cramped and noisy. One Windrush resident described the accommodation as "primitive and unwelcoming, like a sparsely furnished rabbit's warren".

They tried to sleep as trains rattled overhead.

  5. Mayor of London criticises 'disappointing' EU citizens testpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Sadiq KhanImage source, Getty Images

The Mayor of London has criticised the Government's "disappointing" decision to charge EU citizens to apply to stay in the UK after Brexit.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced on Thursday that EU citizens will have to answer three "simple" online questions as part of the process to remain in the UK.

Applications will cost £65 for adults and £32.50 for children and be free for EU nationals who already have residency or indefinite leave to remain.

Sadiq Khan said: “It is disappointing that the Government has not used today as an opportunity to show EU nationals living in the UK goodwill by making this process free of charge to people resident in our country.

"There are approximately one million EU citizens living in London. They are part of the fabric of this city – working hard, paying taxes and playing a major role in our civic and cultural life.

"Their rights need to be protected and so do the rights of the British citizens living across the continent."

City Hall will also be launching a new online portal so that European Londoners "can access the information they need to stay in the UK after Brexit,” Mr Khan said.

As Mayor of London, never let it be said that Sadiq Khan doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet. Because everywhere you look around Croydon, at roadside verges which are supposed to be in the care of Transport for London, and there’s rapidly growing tufts of summer grass that would be worthy of the most unplayable rough at any Open golf championship.
