Cleaners working at Kensington and Chelsea town hall have been told they will get a pay rise so that they are paid the London Living Wage.

The pay increase was agreed after union reps for the United Voices of the World union met council leader Elizabeth Campbell and chief executive Barry Quirk.

The meeting on Monday followed a three-day strike at the town hall by 16 shift workers from the service company Amey who called for an increase from their £7.83 an hour wage to the London Living Wage of £10.20.

Union rep Petros Elia also interrupted a planning meeting to argue for a rise to £10.20 an hour, which is the voluntary London Living Wage.

The council said details have to be worked out.

A spokesman said the talks had been "positive".

"The aim is to ensure that everyone gets the London Living Wage who works at the council.”

The spokesman added that all council employees earn the London Living Wage or above and the council would look at ways to fund the increase.

The council plans to make a further announcement in November.

The United Voices of the World union said it had “secured a full commitment to pay all the cleaners the London Living Wage and improved working conditions from January 2019.”

It added that the council leader said she would try to get a retrospective payment of the difference in wages from October until the cleaners are paid the London Living Wage.

  10. Library café reopening delayed over 'procurement failures'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 4 September 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

The reopening of Enfield Town Library's café has been delayed due to a botched procurement process.

The café has been closed since August last year after the previous operators decided not to extend their lease.

Enfield Council confirmed that the process of finding a new operator would have to be re-run because a previous bid did not follow the correct procedure.

The café is expected to be back open before Christmas.

The Conservative group has criticised the council for its handling of the procurement process. Conservative leader Cllr Joanne Laban said: "The procurement failures will mean that it will continue to be vacant for some time.

"This is not good news for the community. When it comes to procurement Enfield Council really needs to improve."

An Enfield Council spokesperson said: "Enfield Council has a robust tendering process and has a legal responsibility to make sure any undertaking is competitive, fair and transparent.

"By re-starting the tendering process for this location, we believe that we can achieve the right outcome for users and the council."
