Who is the Lib Dem leader Vince Cable?

Liberal Democrat leader and Twickenham MP Sir Vince Cable has announced plans to step down after Brexit is "resolved or stopped".

Sir Vince, 75, said reports of his imminent departure were "very wide of the mark" and insisted he would stay on to steer the party through any Brexit-related turmoil, including any possible general election.

However, in a London speech he said the time would be right for a leadership election after that under new rules he unveiled to widen participation in the party.

Sir Vince also made a naked pitch to disaffected Labour and Conservative MPs and members unhappy at the direction their parties are moving to join the Lib Dems, saying it was better to join an existing centrist party than to start a new one.

A tout who breached an order barring him from selling tickets at Wimbledon has been given a suspended jail term.

Gary Nichols, of Chessington, south west London, was handed a six-month sentence suspended for two years following a ruling that he was in contempt of court.

The High Court heard bosses at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which stages the Wimbledon Championships, had complained that the 52-year-old had breached a banning order imposed by another judge.

They said an employee "acting as an agent" had bought a Centre Court ticket from Nichols on 7 July and he had also been observed in a nearby coffee shop and pub.

Mr Justice Lane said Nichols had spoken of wanting £100 for a Centre Court ticket, of having tickets for other courts, and said he could "always get tickets".

Nichols told the judge that he had not understood the risk he was running.

Two takeaways in Waltham Forest have been shutdown by the council after inspectors found pest infestations and "dangerously unclean" kitchens.

On 15 August hygiene officers visited Yildirim Bakery, on St James Street and found that the premises was infested with German cockroaches scuttling around the filthy store.

They immediately closed the shop, and Thames Magistrates’ Court granted the Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order and awarded costs of £864 to the council.

In a separate case, Lagos Island Restaurant, of Lea Bridge Road, Leyton was closed after officers found an infestation of cockroaches, as well as evidence of mice.

Waltham Forest Council said the kitchen was extremely dirty and officers concluded the risk to public health was too high to allow the restaurant to remain open.

Magistrates awarded the council costs of £1,106.63 in light of the severe hygiene failings at Lagos Island.

    Sir Vince CableImage source, PA

Sir Vince Cable could stand down as Lib Dem leader as soon as next year - and wants the contest to replace him to be opened up to non-party members.

In a speech later, the MP for Twickenham will set out plans to transform the party into a "movement for moderates".

Party sources say he wants to see this delivered while he is still leader and wants to stay in his job for crucial Brexit developments.

He also wants to continue campaigning for a second EU referendum.

"He has a set of objectives rather than a timeline," a senior Lib Dem source said.

  18. UK schoolgirls pressured into FGM, campaigner sayspublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 7 September 2018

    Leyla HusseinImage source, PA

British schoolgirls have been pressured by their fellow students into having female genital mutilation, a campaigner against the practice has said.

Leyla Hussein said girls are vulnerable as some see it as a cultural practice despite it being a crime in the UK.

Her warning came as British and US agencies signed an agreement to step up co-operation in tackling FGM.

A police commander said intelligence has to date been "woeful" and the lack of a UK conviction was unacceptable.

The proclamation between law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Atlantic - including the NPCC, the Metropolitan Police, Border Force, the FBI, and the US Department of Homeland Security - pledges to better share intelligence and best practice on identifying victims and prosecuting perpetrators.

It is hoped the new agreement will improve existing operations at airports including London Heathrow and JFK in New York and help spot victims as they are taken to parts of the world to be cut, such as North Africa and the Middle East.
