A community group is urging people to get behind its campaign to reverse the decision to make a popular walk-in centre appointment-only.

Several members of #Fixit Harrow Network were concerned about the changes to Alexandra Avenue Health Centre, in South Harrow.

Visitors will now need to make an appointment in advance if they wish to see a doctor. Previously, it acted as one of three walk-in centres in the borough.

It will also only be available to those registered with a GP in Harrow, irrespective of where people live.

Caren Duhig, founder of #Fixit, started an online petition to express these worries and she hopes to see the walk-in services resumed.

“Elderly and vulnerable patients, and parents within the local area, are most likely to be hit the hardest by this change to the Alex clinic’s availability too – it is essential that we ensure those people have a voice,” she said.

There are fears that the closure of the walk-in service will increase pressures on the A&E department at Northwick Park Hospital.

Cllr Graham Henson, leader of Harrow Council, said he was particularly disappointed that those living in Harrow but registered with a GP in Hillingdon or Ealing, for example, will lose out.

The decision to make these changes have been criticised by Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West, and he intends to lobby for their reversal.

Harrow Clinical Commissioning Group, which made the call, explained that it was taken to ensure that people have “greater access to primary care”.

It added that there are “no current plans” to alter the situation at Pinn Medical Centre or Belmont Health Centre, the remaining walk-in centres in Harrow.

Sir Ian McKellen will celebrate his 80th birthday with an 80-date tour which begins at his local theatre on the Isle of Dogs.

The renowned actor's On Stage show, which will include a collection of anecdotes and acting from across his career, is in support of regional theatre.

Speaking about the first date at The Space in Westferry Road he said: "I am a patron of The Space and have been very fond of it, ever since I was involved with Robert Richardson's initiative in saving this delightful Wee Free Church as an old and treasured asset on the Isle of Dogs."

Other London venues he will visit as part of the tour are the National Theatre, the Above The Stag Theatre on Albert Embankment and the Lyric Hammersmith.

A couple who met while working for the London Fire Brigade are retiring on the same day after nearly 62 years of combined service.

Control officer Ann Giles, 57, joined the service in 1988 while her partner Mark Young, 55, joined the Brigade 10 months before her.

Speaking about her retirement, Ms Giles said "the thing I’m going to miss the most is the people" while firefighter Mr Young said he had "loved just getting out there and getting stuck in.”

The couple, who live in Benfleet, Essex, and have two grown up children aged 21 and 23, said they are looking forward to spending the festive period with their family.

A man has been charged with the murder of George Barker, who was stabbed at a gym run by actor Idris Elba's kickboxing trainer.

Charles Riddington is accused of killing the 24-year-old from South Darenth, Kent, at the Double K Gym in Bexley in 2016.

Mr Riddington was recently extradited to the UK from the Turkish-controlled part of Cyprus.

He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court later.

An app has been created which allows people to communicate with fellow commuters on their phone while riding on the Tube.

TubeChat uses Bluetooth to connect devices underground up to a range of 200m when there is no mobile signal or wi-fi.

Its developers said they had created the app to help combat loneliness among Londoners.

Creator Nina Tumanishvili said she was "on the Tube one day and realised that people were buried in their phones, lost in a closed world of their own.

"Technology had isolated them. I wanted to change that. I wanted to use technology to connect people and bring them closer.”

It is currently only available on iOS with an Android version to be introduced next year.

Residents in Erith will face a compulsory purchase order in May next year, according to Bexley Council’s leader.

The redevelopment of the Arthur Street Estate has long been in the works and is set to be carried out by housing association Orbit.

Orbit is planning to bulldoze three 13-storey tower blocks and low-rise flats, claiming they are “no longer meeting modern standards.”

To facilitate the redevelopment, the council is planning on using its power to compulsorily purchase homes, likely to be carried out in May.

Orbit has planned for 321 homes, spread across five towers between two and eight storeys high, with 253 parking spaces.

At a council meeting, opposition leader Daniel Francis said the development will lead to a net loss of socially rented homes.

“Our concern is the cause that will have on the number of homeless families and the extra pressure that will put on our homeless budget if we are losing socially rented homes,” he said.

The site currently consists of 263 homes, 97% of which are socially rented, and sits across the road from Orbit’s Erith Park development.

Orbit has said previously 38% of their development would be London affordable rent, while 18% would be living rent and 24% shared ownership. The rest would be private homes.

According to council documents, a “programme approach” has been proposed to re-providing socially rented homes, meaning they will be aggregated over a series of developments.

Cllr Louie French, cabinet member for growth, said: “It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to comment too much on a planning application that is coming forward, however looking at the outline of what I think will come forward, there is an increase in family sized homes."

A planning application is now expected in December following consultations with the public earlier this year.

According to council documents, the first formal stage of the CPO process is about to be undertaken, meaning tenants and property owners will be written to.
