  2. NHS set to announce A&E and Maternity closures at St Helierpublished at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2018

    NHS chiefs in Merton will later this week propose the closure of the Accident and Emergency department and the Maternity unit at St Helier Hospital, according to an MP for the area.

    The MP, Siobhain McDonagh, warns that any such closures are likely to have a far-reaching impact on health service provision across south London, including at Croydon’s Mayday Hospital.

  3. Pothole Busters launches in Hounslowpublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2018

    A team of ‘pothole busters’ hired by Hounslow Council is aiming to destroy the driver’s worst demons in the borough once and for all.

    In an echo of the famous Ghostbusters movies, the council’s pothole busting team is encouraging you to call up if you spot a road surface problem so it can get to the scene and blast it with tarmac.

    It promises to bring its top-notch road repair equipment to tackle the job and hopefully prevent you from getting ‘slimed’ by driving into a pothole in the process.

    The pothole pledge underlines the fact the council says it sees dealing with potholes as one of its key priorities.

    The council website, external guides residents on how to report potholes and you can follow the progress of your case online.

    The council says all roads and highways in the borough are routinely inspected for defects, but potholes can quickly deteriorate, so early intervention is crucial.

    Growing numbers of children excluded from school in Croydon and across London are being left at risk of involvement in knife crime and violence, according to research from children’s charity Barnardo’s and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Knife Crime.

    Police have released a CCTV image of a man they want to trace after a woman was sexually assaulted as she slept on a bus in Ilford.

    The victim, aged in her 30s, was attacked in the early hours of 6 October after she dozed off on a N8 bus between Stratford bus station and Gants Hill.

    Following the assault the man then got off the bus.

    Det Con Harry Esealuka said the woman had been left "devastated by the incident" and said police wanted to "hear from passengers who were on the same bus and confronted the attacker before he left the scene.”

  9. Real Living Wage rises to £9 an hourpublished at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2018

    People need to earn more to meet their basic needs, says Living Wage Foundation director.

    Those lucky enough to work for an employer who has voluntarily signed up to the real Living Wage are set for a 2.8% pay rise this week.

    For the first time they will receive £9 an hour.

    This is not to be confused with the compulsory National Living Wage, which is currently £7.83 an hour for anyone over the age of 25.

    Real Living Wage employers in London will pay an extra 3.4%, bringing the minimum hourly rate to £10.55.
