  3. Mayor launches five new Low Emission Bus Zonespublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2018

    Five new "clean air" Low Emission Bus Zones have been introduced in some of the capital’s worst polluted hotspots.

    Only buses that meet the cleanest emission standards will operate within the new Low Emission Bus Zones, which have been delivered through a combination of new and retrofitted vehicles, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said.

    Seven Low Emission Bus Zones are now up and running in the capital - which includes the five new zones announced today plus two zones launched last year in Putney High Street and on Brixton Road.

    The mayor will deliver 12 Low Emission Bus Zones in total, and all of these will be in place ahead of schedule by the end of 2019.

    The five new Low Emission Bus Zones are:

    • Camberwell to New Cross, cleaning up more than 380 buses
    • Wandsworth to St John Hill, cleaning up more than 200 buses
    • High Road Haringey to Green Lanes, cleaning up more than 330 buses
    • A12 Eastern Avenue to Homerton Road, cleaning up more than 290 buses
    • Edgware Road Kilburn to Maida Vale, cleaning up more than 240 buses

    London has six out of the 10 worst boroughs in the UK for fly-tipping, figures have revealed.

    Almost one million incidents of fly-tipping were reported by councils across England during 2017-18. It's the first time the figure has fallen in five years.

    Councils recorded 997,553 incidents of illegal dumping, an average of more than 2,700 a day.

    It was a slight decrease on the 1,011,000 incidents in 2016-17 and the first time the figure has dropped since 2013.

    The government said two-thirds of fly-tipping involved household waste.

    A “children’s university” is going to be established following the go-ahead from Bexley councillors.

    The Children’s University is a charity that works with schools to provide extra-curricular activities.

    According to the charity, research shows more after-school activities can help pupils’ confidence and progress – with kids lacking those opportunities falling behind.

    “The scheme allows young people and their families, regardless of their backgrounds, to feel engaged with the Bexley borough’s extra curriculum activities and break down any barriers that may exist in the disadvantaged areas", Bexley Council said.

    Councillor John Fuller said: “These kids will learn something new. Things that they didn’t think achievable for them.

    "No child will miss out – it’s a new challenge that will encourage them to get their parents out there too.”

    Schools are currently piloting the programme which will then be rolled out next year, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

    Major projects at five of the 45 lock sites operated by the Environment Agency on the Thames are beginning.

    The annual winter programme "enables and enhances boating activity" on the non-tidal River Thames.

    In order of value the major projects are:

    • Teddington Lock, Teddington, Middlesex - refurbishing the concrete-lined lock chamber of the launch lock (one of three different locks at this unique site) at a cost of £450,000
    • Day’s Lock, Little Wittenham, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire – fabricating four brand new gates at our workshop in Osney at a cost of £100,000 for installation in 2019/20
    • Caversham Lock, Reading, Berkshire – refurbishing the concrete-lined lock chamber at a cost of £400,000
    • Rushey Lock, Buckland Marsh, near Faringdon, Oxfordshire – replacing the facing timber and balance beams on all four lock gates at a cost of £100,000
    • Molesey Lock, East Molesey, Surrey – replacing the facing timber on all four lock gates at a cost of £70,000.

    Additionally smaller works will be carried out at Cookham Lock near Maidenhead, Berkshire, structural surveys of the lock chambers at King’s Lock near Wolvercote, Oxfordshire, and Whitchurch Lock near Reading in Berkshire.

    Mooring facilities at Blake’s Lock in Reading will also be refurbished.

    A London Assembly member is urging supermarkets in the capital to do more to cut down on plastic use after new figures were released by Greenpeace.

    The environmental campaign group ranked the UK's top supermarkets, external based on various plastic policies, with Iceland topping the charts and Sainsbury's trailing in 10th position.

    Labour’s London Assembly environment spokesperson, Leonie Cooper, said: “Supermarkets in London need to step up and take responsibility for failing to tackle our plastics scourge by enabling Londoners to recycle more. A lot of good work is under way to tackle plastic waste, but recycling rates in the capital are still the lowest in the country."

    Ms Copper said the London Assembly Environment Committee has written to the mayor of London, asking him to encourage supermarkets to cut down on their use of plastic packaging.

    Elena Polisano, from Greenpeace, said, external: "UK supermarkets have a long way to go, but a year ago these scores would have been even lower – the action we’re taking together is working."

    A teenager from Kent, who went missing three weeks ago on a visit to a Surrey theme park, is now thought to be in London.

    Darcie Goobie, 14 and from Dartford, was last seen at Thorpe Park on 26 October.

    She also goes by the name Lexi Rose Anne, and could be in Hackney, although police say she is also known to visit the Waterloo and King's Cross areas.
