Shortly before 13:45 GMT British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to Bexleyheath station and had to help passengers to safety from the damaged train.

Enquiries are now underway to determine how the tyre came to be on the tracks.

It has caused disruption, with Southeastern warning passengers to check before they travel this evening.

Demonstrators have blockaded the UK energy department in London over what they call the climate change crisis.

They blocked entry to the offices by lying chained together on the pavement.

The UK is seen as a leader in policies to reduce greenhouse gases and ministers will soon be considering tougher targets.

But the protesters say research suggests the chance of keeping global temperature rise under a 2C danger threshold is just one in 20.

  17. Dementia risk: Five-minute scan 'can predict cognitive decline'published at 15:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2018

A five-minute scan could be used to spot people at risk of dementia before symptoms appear, researchers at a London university claim.

Scientists used ultrasound scanners to look at blood vessels in the necks of more than 3,000 people and monitored them over the next 15 years.

They found those with the most intense pulses went on to experience greater cognitive decline over the next decade than the other study participants.

Researchers hope it may offer a new way to predict cognitive decline.

An international team of experts, led by University College London, measured the intensity of the pulse travelling towards the brain in 3,191 people in 2002.

A more intense pulse can cause damage to the small vessels of the brain, structural changes in the brain's blood vessel network and minor bleeds known as mini-strokes.
