Mundill Mahil was sentenced to three years in jail for her part in the death of Gagandip Singh
Redbridge’s newly elected mayor has decided to step down, but says he stands united with his wife, despite her controversial past.
Shortly after Cllr Variner Singh-Bola announced his new position last week, it was revealed his wife Mundill Mahil had once lured a man to his grisly death and served three years in prison.
Ms Mahil’s conviction or grievous bodily harm in 2012 came after she enticed 21-year-old Gagandip Singh to her student flat in Brighton.
Mr Singh was then beaten over the head by another man, tied up and thrown into the back of a Mercedes which was set alight.
Ms Mahil was sentenced to three years behind bars for greivous bodily harm in 2012, but was released on licence in 2014.
She married Cllr Singh-Bola in 2016.
After these relevations about his wife’s past made national headlines, today Cllr Singh Bola has decided to step down from the role “in the interest of his family.”

The Metropolitan Police carried out a two-week search in November at the house in Sutton Coldfield - once owned by the mother of suspect John Cannan.
But Phil Carey said his kitchen needed fixing, the garden was a "state" and a shed was collapsing.
The force said it was committed to restoring the property.
During the search for the body of the estate agent who disappeared in west London in 1986, police excavated the garden, dismantled a garage, removed paving and dug a hole in the kitchen floor.

Haringey Council needs to drive a harder bargain with developers so existing residents benefit from regeneration projects, according to an expert.
Dr Mark Panton, who lectures at Birkbeck, University of London, has written a book – Tottenham’s Trojan Horse – exploring the costs and benefits of regeneration schemes linked to the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium in Haringey.
He says while councils are under financial strain due to austerity, they need to push harder to ensure developers provide enough affordable homes for their residents.
Dr Panton is giving a free talk on his work at Islington College later – and he hopes those affected by the Tottenham project will attend.
He said: “Where developers build on their land, councils should be driving a harder bargain. Developers are starting off with 20% profit and saying anything less is not viable.
“They (councils) have got to say no to that – not everyone gets a guarantee of a 20% profit.
“Spurs ended up with plans for a new ground and 585 units. They got a financial viability report that said they were working with a one per cent profit margin.
“It wasn’t challenged – but if you are giving up land on the other side of the High Road, you would try and reach those (affordable housing) targets.”
The football club defended its plans and claimed it was developing hundreds of new affordable homes and creating thousands of jobs for local people.
The spokesman said: “The club makes no apologies for investing hundreds of millions of pounds in the development of a new stadium that will bring significant economic benefits to one of the most deprived areas of London, developing hundreds of new affordable homes or creating thousands of jobs for local people.
“We have a track record from the stadium site of successfully relocating businesses, the majority of whom chose to stay in the area – they all had choices, and all benefited.
“The club’s previous affordable housing schemes have enabled Love Lane Estate residents choosing to relocate to stay within their local area.” Tottenham Hotspur is contributing £4 million to improve nearby infrastructure and has also opened a primary school and sixth form college.
Haringey Council says the new Spurs stadium will bring more than 1.5 million visitors to the borough every year, create 3,500 jobs and pump £293 million a year into the local economy.

A clean air fee of 15p per mile will be added to every trip taken in the capital.
The minicab app firm expects the scheme to raise more than £200 million in the coming years, which will be used to help drivers convert to electric cars.
Uber said it is "keen to expand" the initiative to other UK cities.
A London driver using the app for an average of 40 hours per week will be given around £3,000 towards the purchase cost of an electric car in two years, according to the company.
The clean air fee will not include miles travelled to a passenger's pick up location and will not be affected by dynamic pricing.
Uber expects the surcharge to be around 45p for an average trip. It wants 20,000 cars on its app in London to be fully electric by the end of 2021, increasing to every car by 2025.
There are currently around 45,000 Uber drivers in the capital.

Camden tenants’ groups have made calls to the Town Hall for an “enhanced” CCTV service to be deployed across the borough’s housing estates.
Representatives from the borough’s District Management Committees (DMCs) were recently consulted on hikes to service charges.
The increases come against a background of rent reductions for council tenants put in place by central government in 2016, creating a challenging environment for the borough’s housing services.
The installation of the new service could be funded by a new weekly service charge of 98p for tenants, as other charges including for caretaking, communal lighting and maintenance are to be whacked up to make an annual gain for the Town Hall of over a quarter of a million pounds.
The recommendations are to be looked at by a Cabinet meeting of the council tomorrow.
Camden’s 2018 crime stats showed it had the third highest amount of crimes across London between March 2016 and March 2018, with 72,010 crimes recorded across the borough during the period.
Detectives investigating the murder of Jaden Moodie are continuing to appeal for information one week on from when he was stabbed to death in Leyton.
Jaden, 14, was declared dead by paramedics on Tuesday, 8 January following an incident in Bickley Road, E10.
He had been struck by a car and then fatally stabbed in what police are treating as a targeted attack.
The vehicle, a black Mercedes B Class, was found in the Carlisle Road area on Wednesday 9 January, and was removed for further forensic examination.
Detectives will return to the Bickley Road and Carlisle Road areas this evening to carry out an anniversary appeal.
"My team and I will be returning to Bickley Road this evening and we would urge anyone with information, no matter how trivial it may seem, to come and speak to us", Det Ch Insp Chris Soole said.
