Europe's biggest infrastructure project will definitely not be finished by 2019, the project's chief executive has confirmed.

Crossrail was supposed to open in December 2018 but has been delayed several times amid rising costs.

A £1.4bn bailout was announced for the £15bn project, known as the Elizabeth Line, when it was pushed back beyond its launch date of autumn 2019

Mark Wild, Crossrail's chief executive, told the Public Accounts Committee in parliament on Wednesday there was no chance the project would be finished by the end of the year.

He added he "very, very much want to get this done" in 2020.

Bernadette Kelly, from the Department for Transport told MPs the "fundamental problem" to rising the costs and delays to the project was "risks were not adequately identified and assessed and mitigated and reported by and within Crossrail."

Crossrail chairman Tony Meggs said the finger of blame could not be put to one group but to the whole "system".
