At a time when Britain appears deadlocked in discussions about Brexit, architects have released images of how they would redesign the Palace of Westminster to improve collaboration between MPs.

Under the plans the House of Commons, where opposing MPs face each other in lines, would be replaced by a new circular Central Assembly Hall "promoting collaborative, as opposed to confrontational, debate".

The tower containing Big Ben would be repurposed as a modern communication tower, with digital screens providing updates from inside Westminster, while a parametric glass structure would be at the building's centre "to maximise openness and transparency."

James Mitchell, of Axiom Architects who created the design, said the current buildings "are shrouded by high walls and are totally impenetrable".

"We want to encourage collaboration and openness, rather than division and conflict – which are exactly the qualities we need in this increasingly uncertain political climate."

One woman is using her smartphone and paddleboard to help rid London's rivers and canals of litter.

Lizzie Carr has designed an app that allows users to log photos of discarded plastics and she's hoping it will help make a difference to the environment.

A Chinese restaurant in Eltham accused of employing three illegal workers who slept upstairs has had its licence suspended.

The Home Office said workers at China Noodle in Elm Terrace ran from the kitchen towards the door to escape when officers turned up out of the blue in January.

Since the inspection, one of the three Chinese nationals has been granted leave to stay – while the other two have been released on immigration bail.

At a licensing meeting on 4 April, chief immigration officer Daniel Twinning said the restaurant's owner Zheng He Zang and his brother Zeng Jain Zheng were hostile and aggressive to officers.

A panel of three councillors granted his request to suspend the restaurant's licence for a month and impose new conditions.

A lawyer, speaking on behalf of the restaurant, said the restaurant employees apologised "unreservedly" and added: "Mr Zeng fully recognises there is a need to cooperate and they were wrong to be aggressive. “Nevertheless, they understand unequivocally, to cooperate with officers."

Jason Kakaire, 29, is accused of five stabbings in the Edmonton area of north London.

Residents staged a protest in Kensington today over cancer-causing chemicals found near Grenfell Tower.

Research by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) says dust and debris from the fire have polluted the surrounding area.

Dozens of residents donned dust suits and face masks as they joined a flash mob in north Kensington and Shepherd’s Bush to highlight their concerns over the findings.

Resident and Justice4Grenfell campaigner Moyra Samuels called for a "proper screening programme for the local community".

One of the event organisers, Elizabeth Harington Stravoravdis, from the Kensington Residents Alliance, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "We want more clarity, we want more transparency, we want more provisions from the NHS in in depth monitoring and not just for five years.”

The NHS is offering enhanced health checks and fast track appointments for vulnerable patients who are concerned about their health.

New environmental tests commissioned by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government are due to get under way.

In a letter to residents the government explained it would be “an investigation of the local area and gathering all relevant background information, including a site survey and any potential historical sources of pollution”.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey will face no punishment for an alleged Nazi salute after an FA charge was found not proven by an independent regulatory commission.

Mary Quant changed the way that 1960s London looked at fashion, defining the era with her brightly-coloured dresses and trouser suits.

Quant's fashion was a far cry from Parisian couture - and her influence can still be seen on the High Street today.

Now, the Victoria and Albert Museum, which has the largest collection of Quant clothing in the world, has opened a new exhibition looking at the 85-year-old's legacy.

A drab office block sandwiched between a pub and a branch of Starbucks was a secret base of spy agency GCHQ, it has been confirmed.

The anonymous building opposite St James's Park Tube station in central London was used by British spooks for 66 years.

Despite the covert goings-on within, neighbours said the address's purpose was an open secret among locals.

GCHQ acknowledged the location after moving out of its home.

A man has been charged with the murder of a shopkeeper who was stabbed to death in a robbery at his newsagents.

Ravi Katharkamar, 54, was attacked while opening Marsh Food and Wine in Pinner, north-west London, on 24 March.

He was found by a member of the public, and pronounced dead at the scene 45 minutes later. Police said his attacker fled with a shop till.

Alex Gunn, 31, is due to appear before Willesden Magistrates' Court, the Metropolitan Police Service said.
