Books that “promote hatred towards homosexuality and misogynistic views” have been found in an east London Islamic primary school.

The Zakariya Primary School in Forest Gate was rated “inadequate” by Ofsted , externalafter a visit in February.

School leaders failed to protect children from extreme views, according to the report.

Inspectors said they found books in the school’s library that “were not appropriate for pupils” and contained text that was “counter to British values”.

One book stated "Many so-called wise people are committing it, but sodomy is such an awful thing that even animals abhor it except the pigs.’”

Other books were “misogynistic”, inspectors said, with one stating that a wife is “not permitted to do anything that may render her companionship less desirable or less gratifying."

The school, which charges £2,600 a year and has about 100 pupils, was also rated as “inadequate” in 2017 after inspectors found the facilitates were not up to scratch.

School trustee Asif Choudhury said: “Our school is a safe place for children. Our headteacher is a woman and the school is predominantly run by women. The idea we are misogynistic is not correct.

“We do not know how those books got into our library. They do not belong to the school

  3. Cash boost to help reunite homeless with their familiespublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 4 April 2019

The Mayor of London has given money to an online platform to help reunite homeless people with their families.

A total of £62,000 has been given from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s ‘rough sleeping innovation fund’ to the new ‘Missing People Matching Tool’ – run by charity Missing People – to help outreach works find out if people sleeping rough have been reported missing.

If a homeless person is found to have been reported missing the charity can offer to let their family and friends know they are safe and offer them a reunion.

Mr Khan said: “The increase in rough sleeping in recent years across the country is a national disgrace and tragically it is often the most vulnerable in society who find themselves homeless.

“It is crucial we do all we can to help people off the streets of London, and I am pleased to be supporting Missing People’s work to help reunite homeless people with their friends and family who love them.”

According to Mr Khan’s database of homeless people in the capital over 7,000 people were reported sleeping rough across the capital and there are more than 1,600 missing adults on Missing People’s database.

Susannah Drury, the director of policy and research for Missing People said the charity is “delighted” Mr Khan is funding the project.

She added: “This is just the first stage of this project – we hope that in time, more support organisations will link into the tool to enhance its reach and impact even further.”

  14. Petition to remove static barbecues from Sutton parkpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 4 April 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A petition calling for static barbecues in Beddington Park to be removed has gathered more than 300 signatures.

It is also calling for no more barbecues to be added and to keep parking at the park free.

There are currently six static barbecues in the park and plans in the pipeline to introduce more.

Last year, a booking system was introduced after groups were hogging the barbecues for the whole day – which has made Sutton council more than £10,000.

But the petition claims that since the static barbecues were introduced they have attracted more people, litter and antisocial behaviour.

The petition said: “Enforcement officers have been overwhelmed by these large groups and have not been able to stop people using the bushes as toilets, throwing rubbish all over the park, anti social behaviour and inconsiderate parking.”

There are also initial plans to introduce party barbecues in the park but the petition clams it would create more problems in the park.

It added: “The council also want to start charging for parking, making a nice, free day out at the park on the swings or feeding the ducks cost you money.

“We would like to see all barbecues removed from the park to keep the place clean, safe and accessible to all: wildlife, children and adults.”

The petition will close on 26 April.
