Maintenance and engineering workers on London Underground have voted to go on strike in a dispute over cuts.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) said its 1,000 members based at depots across the network had backed industrial action by 9-1.

The union claimed reliability and safety was being hit by plans to cut inspection and preparation schedules.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "The result of this ballot shows just how angry Tube staff are at proposals London Underground are attempting to bulldoze through that would decimate the inspection and safety culture on the fleet.

"They should pull back immediately rather than crash on regardless of the consequences of their actions.

"The overwhelming ballot result will now be considered by the union's executive. We remain available for genuine and serious talks."

  8. Row over street lights 'left on 24/7'published at 11:16 British Summer Time 3 April 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Westminster council has hit back after Labour politicians claimed half the borough’s street lights were left burning 24/7 for weeks.

The bizarre row broke out after Westminster’s former contractor, Harvard Technology, went into administration in December, and was refusing to turn off up to 14,000 street lights.

The council and the company both say the issue was resolved a week after the fiasco began on 8 March, once a settlement fee was agreed.

But Westminster Labour party claimed in a press release that the lights were left on day and night for “nearly three months”.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg told the BBC Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It was a ridiculous situation for half the street lights in Westminster to be left on 24 hours a day.

“It was a total waste of electricity and the cost of that was obviously borne partly by council tax payers.”

Cllr Tim Mitchell, Westminster’s cabinet member for environment and city management, said: “A solution was found and street lights returned to normal over the course of the weekend of March 15.

“The agreement with the administrator includes a small fee. From an environmental point of view we felt that it was important to get this resolved quickly and we are happy we’ve been able to do that.”

The size of the fee could not be disclosed because it is commercially sensitive, a council spokesman said.

The Yorkshire-based lighting company’s administrators Grant Thornton said the problem with Westminster’s lights lasted between 8 March and 15.

Street lights operated by Bromley council and Transport for London were also reportedly affected after Harvard Technology entered administration.
