  17. London Luton Airport staff to strike this weekendpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

    Luton AirportImage source, PA

Security staff at London Luton Airport are to stage a series of strikes in a row over new shift patterns, including over this coming Bank Holiday weekend.

Members of Unite will walk out on 5 May and again from 7 May to 13 May, claiming "heavy handed" changes to working time.

The union accused the airport of attempting to push through a new shift pattern affecting about 120 security guards, leading to extra working days.

Unite regional officer Jeff Hodge said: "Luton Airport is taking a very heavy handed approach by trying to force security guards to work an extra 15 days.

"The airport needs to take responsibility for the staff shortages by doing what's needed to recruit new staff rather than heaping all the burden on to its workforce.

In response a Luton Airport spokesman said: "We are disappointed Unite is pressing ahead with industrial action, however we have robust contingency plans in place to minimise disruption to passengers.

"We remain open to further talks with Unite, but they have declined our requests to meet."

The airport said it gave staff affected by the shift changes a vote on different options and accepted the outcome, with the chosen shift pattern due to begin on Wednesday.

The university is using the dogs as a way of reducing anxiety among students

Five dogs have joined the staff of Middlesex University to help students with exam stress or whose anxiety puts them at risk of dropping out.

The five labradors have become "canine teaching assistants" and will work on improving students' wellbeing.

The five have their own staff cards, in a project purported to be the most systematic use of dogs in a university.

"You can literally feel stress levels reducing," said Fiona Suthers, head of clinical skills at the university.

  19. Activists call Michael Gove meeting 'disappointing'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 30 April 2019

    Extinction Rebellion members

Extinction Rebellion says a meeting with Environment Secretary Michael Gove was "very disappointing" because he refused to declare a climate emergency.

The group -who carried out 10 days of climate change protests across London- met Mr Gove on Tuesday for talks.

But its youth representative, 14-year-old Felix Ottaway O'Mahony, said: "The rebellion has to continue because... our futures are not safe."

Mr Gove said he "shared their higher ideals" to tackle climate change.
