Richard Lubbock was a middle-class coin dealer from London when, in 2003, he separated from his wife and swapped his quiet life for clubbing and drugs. He ended up being imprisoned for possessing crystal meth worth more than £1.5m.

When 30 police officers stormed Richard Lubbock's luxury apartment in 2009, as he sat half-dressed watching a documentary series about World War Two, one thought crossed his mind: "Thank God it's over."

The Jewish coin dealer, aged 62 at the time, had by then become what was said to be Britain's biggest dealer of crystal meth.

His involvement had grown over several years - the catalyst being the separation from his wife after coming out as gay.

Last week Debenhams named 22 stores including those in Wimbledon and Wandsworth which it plans to close as part of a plan by new owners to revive the department store chain.

But what will happen to all that empty retail space?

In total, 235 former department stores currently stand empty across the UK following a spate of recent closures, according to the Local Data Company.

That is up from 82 in 2014.

However, some former shops are finding inventive ways to reuse redundant space, offering potential inspiration for any Debenhams stores that struggle to find buyers.

Simon Collins could have used the excuse often used by school children who haven't done their homework for not running the London Marathon on Sunday.

He tweeted: "A puppy savaged my shoes minutes before the start of the London Marathon."

Mr Collins, from Canterbury, had been staying with a friend in London the night before the race.

"I nearly burst into tears when I found the shoes less than an hour before the race."

He said he had no option but to tape up his damaged trainers and hope for the best.

"They did not deteriorate at all and I still managed to finish," he tweeted.
