That was a significant police update from the Met's Stuart Bell, who spoke to reporters a short while ago.

We now know not only that this was a frightening incident for many here this morning - but tragically a teenager has been killed.

At the end of the news update, Bell said police believed this wasn’t a targeted attack - but he wouldn’t answer questions asked by reporters about whether the suspect was known to the police, and if he had previously been arrested.

We're hearing from more witnesses now, who saw what happened in Hainault this morning.

Chris Bates, a local resident who lives on Thurlow Gardens, tells Radio 5 Live he saw the alleged attacker being arrested:

    Quote Message

He had a big samurai sword basically. It was a huge sword. I saw it all from my bedroom window and then when he went into the driveway, a couple doors down, I ran outside and then the police Tasered him there.

    Quote Message

It’s terrible when people are going to school, work. It’s the last thing you want to hear, someone running around the local area with a samurai sword.

    Quote Message

Thank god I didn’t go down and get a bottle of milk from the local shop otherwise I would have met him, god knows what would have happened. Credit to the police, they were all very brave."
