    A soldier shot during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 survived as the bullet hit a spoon and bible he kept in his jacket pocket.

    Henry Cooper, from Manchester, was aged 20 when he was hit in the chest during the battle but the bullet was deflected before it pierced his skin.

    Mr Cooper returned to the UK and spent months in hospital in Southampton recovering from the gunshot wound.

    His family kept the spoon following his death in the 1970s and his grandson Rod Cooper (pictured) carried it in his pocket while serving in Iraq in 1991.

    A woman has been left feeling "humiliated and shocked" after a sexual assault at a railway station, British Transport Police said.

    A woman was touched inappropriately by a boy, believed to be aged about 11, at Stockport train station on Friday at about 15:45.

    PC Rebecca Swift said: "The victim was waiting with her boyfriend in the booking hall of the station when she was inappropriately touched by a young boy who then left the station laughing."

    Plans to reduce the size of black wheelie bins and boost recycling rates in Manchester have been approved by the city council.

    The bins will be replaced in August by new 140-litre grey bins.

    The council estimates the change will save £2.4m a year in waste disposal costs, through increased recycling rates across the city.

    Police investigating a stabbing at a set of traffic lights in Salford have released a photograph of the victim's injuries as they search for his attacker.

    The 19-year-old motorist was stabbed after pulling up at the junction between Regent Road and Albion Way on 19 June. He was treated in hospital for wounds to his chest.

    His attacker, described as white, large, bald and aged in his 30s, had also stopped at the lights in a blue family-sized car, Greater Manchester Police said.

    Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk has claimed the North had "missed out" on the latest round of Heritage Lottery funding.

    At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Danczuk raised the issue adding Rochdale Town Hall had not been awarded grants for restoration.

    David Cameron said Mr Danczuk was being a "little unfair" focusing on recent projects in the south of England.

    "He'll find, for instance, that Blackpool Museum received a grant of over £13m, so I believe it is fairly balanced across the country."

    A woman who witnessed the aftermath of a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport said it was like a scene "out of a movie".

    Heather Nelson, from Bolton, was on board a plane which had landed just before the attacks.

    "There was glass smashed everywhere and then when you got nearer to where the bombing happened you could see it was a very strong bomb."

    Yesterday's attack killed 41 people and injured more than 230 others.
